Who has experience with kids that spit-up?

Jonah has always had issues with spitting-up from reflux, and he's been on Similac Sensitive RS since he was about 2 months old. That helped control it somewhat, but it's never gone away completely, even with reflux medication (Ranitidine). Well, after the Similac recall, we had to switch to Target-brand formula, and it's been a disaster. We've had a couple choking/projectile vomiting incidents, as well as an increase in frequency of spit-ups. I called the pediatrician last Thursday and she told us to put him back on Similac because it's back on the shelf. So, I returned my unopened canister of the Target-brand formula and walked back to the formula section...only to find that Similac is NOT back on the shelves. So, I bought the Enfamil for Spit-Ups (or whatever it's called). So far, no change, other than that the spit-up is chunkier (sorry for the gross details). Does anyone know how long it takes before you notice a difference after switching formulas? Does anyone else have a kid that spits-up? When did it start to decrease? Are there other treatments? I thought he would outgrow this months ago! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • I would guess it might take a couple days to see a difference when you switch formulas since his tummy has to readjust to something different.  We did a couple of fast switches when DD was little and having issues, and it took 2-3 days to really see a difference, and maybe a week for it to totally take effect.  Hopefully he'll adjust soon and the spit-up stops!

  • Unfortunately my pedi said it can take 2 weeks for something to be completely out of their system. That being said, I would think you should see a difference in about a week.

    I hope it gets better!

  • Nicholas has really severe acid reflux and non-acid reflux-- we were using the similac sensitive also but w/ the recall we've switched to the comforts brand (kroger brand) gentle and have had some success...granted our GI just made us switch to soy formula to see if that helps w/ his non-acid reflux and arching but before the switch we felt like it was a really smooth transition from the similac sensitive to the comforts gentle hth! reflux is the worst :-(

  • I would try the next step up from the sensitive formula, which should be Enfamil Gentlease. The milk proteins are partially broken down in that. I think it is different from Similac Sensitive, but I'm not sure. Leah spit up a lot while on regular Similac, but it was much better on Gentlease. She'd spit up once when we burped her, and then not again until her next feeding.

  • nothing helped us except going on nutramigen. it helped immediately. crazy expensive formula, but hey it worked. we saw a GI specialist and that is what they recommended. good luck to you. i know it feels like it will last forever but they go away as they age.
