where to deliver

So I am debating between 2 hospitals, I delivered my daughter at St johns, but was just unhappy with the ability to look out the window at the people gathering to smoke, and the nurse telling me to push at CMs 4 thru 7 (it was painful, and she wasnt even nice to me). So Im thinking of St Joes or Woodwinds. I also am hoping for my boyfriend to um I guess not be so calm, it just kind of took away from the whole drive... Anyways, I am also looking at these 2 bc I THINK they might be easier for family to get to when I deliver, then apparently St Johns was. So tell me, are they? I plan on going for a tour within the next month month 1/2, what is everyones stories, and which did you enjoy?

Re: where to deliver

  • I delivered at St. Joe's and was very impressed.  I also labored at home until the absolute last minute, and arrived basically ready to push, so that could have made a difference.  But the midwife and nurses I had were all amazing, and super encouraging throughout the entire process and recovery.  And they have a waterbirthing room, which was so great.

  • I delivered at Woodwinds and had a great experience.  I arrived only about 20 minutes before dd was born, so I can't speak to a labor experience at the hospital, but I have nothing bad to say about our stay!
  • Have you considered United? It is located in St. Paul, near St. Joes. There L&D area is nice and the staff is great!
  • I would have to see if my obgyn delivers at United, I know he said he delivers at the 3 Healtheast, which is also the affiliate to my Pediatrician, and I know takes my insurance. But thats why Im looking at St Joes and Woodwinds. See one of my other pet peeves that occured at St Johns is Im all for rooming in, but I dont trust my child being alone in the room, and when I was getting ready in the morning to leave, I was desperate for a shower, one by boobs were sore and I knew that would help, & 2 the days before I was rooming in and just either was busy feeding or with guests in the room. So I got a shower the day she was born, and was ready for another, I asked the nurse to take her to the nursery just while she nappped for maybe 20 mins while I showered, they took her to the hall, and left her there, where another nurse eventually rolled her back into my room while I had shampoo covering my head. I was not happy I mighta been paranoid but I asked something simple but yea

  • I have no experience myself, but a friend of mine delivered at Woodwinds and raves about her experience.

  • I delivered at Woodwinds and had a fantastic experiance.

They do not have a nursery as they believe in rooming baby with mommy. They do have nurses and volunteers that LOVE to hold your baby in instances where you want to take a shower.

I didn't labor since I had a c-section, but would highly recommend Woodwinds to anyone :)

    Good Luck!

  • I had the option to go to United, Woodwinds, St. Johns or St. Joes as well.  It was a hard decision.  I researched a lot of things.  St. Joes has the most "pending" lawsuits so that was crossed off our list.  However, they are close to Childrens if need be and have awesome water birthing tubs.  (your OB must be certified to have a water birth and many are not)  My OB/GYN said skip United unless you are high risk or anticipating a problem.  They are decent and it is nice to have Childrens hospital right next door.  However, you will not get the one on one attention that you would get at the others.  Only becasue United is a much bigger hospital and very busy.  I have heard really good things about Woodwinds.  They are newer and very easy to get too.  I personally chose St. John's and had a wonderful experience.  All of the nurses were fabulous (except one).  My only complaint is that they did not encourage/help with breastfeeding which is a HUGE thing for me.
