Potty Training

If you took a break from PTing and started again...

Hi I have been taking a break from PTing and I put my DD back in daipers for now and took away her potty seat and told her when she's ready to use it again to let me know.  I know this probably wasn't the best thing to do...but I also have a very active 15 month old too and he needs lots of attention, so I was getting too frustrated when my DD would have a fit every time I told her it was potty time or had an accident.  We tried underwear for a month and a half and it just never clicked, and it was usually a battle to get her to sit on the potty.  Even if I offered her a sticker or M&M.

How did you reintroduce the potty?

Did you use the prizes or up the ante?

Give me some tricks on how to stop the power struggle b/w my daughter and I.  I just don't want to make this a horrible experience...=( I feel like I have totally confused her...and I now I just want to set the process straight.

  • Yes, I started to try to potty train my son at the end of August and it wasn't working.  He had multiple accidents a day, didn't want to sit on the potty and actually didn't pee for hours one particular day.  So, we stopped it for awhile and then just in the last couple of weeks, he has been asking to go pee mostly (hasn't pooped on the potty), but I have to say that at school they do an incentive program, giving the kids a marble for good behavior and for peeing and pooping in the potty.  At the end of the week, they can 'buy' a prize at the school store.  He's pretty motivated to get a marlbe and eventually a prize.  He has been peeing on the potty at least a couple of times a day at school and at home once or twice.  This is major progress from when we started.  At home I decided to give him a prize every time he goes pee and poop on the potty.   I tried stickers and he didn't buy in to it, so I told him that I would give him a matchbox car each time he goes on the potty.  It's working.  Once he really is going consistently each day, I am going to put him in underwear (he's wearing pull-ups  now) and then start weaning him off of the prizes and maybe just give him a prize for staying dry in his underwear.
