I have read some safety concerns with crib bumpers and SIDS, but I have also known many of moms that have used them. I was thinking of ordering them and then using them when LO is a bit older and is not at such a risk for SIDS. Thoughts...?
We bought a breathable bumper after hearing all the concern of SIDS risk with regular bumpers. Since we aren't getting one of the decorative bedding sets to begin with, we had to buy it separately anyway so we figured we might as well get the breathable, one less thing to worry about.
I would actually prefer to not use a bumper at all and think I might start out that way, but others have told me baby's arms and legs can get stuck between crib rails, so I want to have a bumper in case that's an issue.

I am not planning on using any because I made my own bedding and we have a more modern crib so I didn't feel the need for them.
I know they restrict air flow which can cause SIDS. The only thing I can say about once the baby gets older and moves around there crib could they suffocate themselves against the bumpers?
I used them with my two previous children and will use it with this LO. We have decreased risk of SIDS based on other factors (non smoking home etc...we also don't hang around people that smoke). I will also have an a/c / fan circulating air throughout the room, and have purchased an Angel Care Monitor.
I honestly don't see a bumper any different than using a bassinet which has the same concept as a bumper in terms of air circulation.
We use a breathable bumper. We didn't put it on until DD was able to really move in her crib. I went to check on her during a nap and her foot was stuck in between the crib slats.
I may use a breathable bumper once LO starts to move around more, but I'm not going to use one initially.
I'm sort of bummed out because I can't get the crib skirt for my favorite bedding unless I buy the whole set, which includes a bumper, which I don't want. Therefore, I'm buying the bedding in pieces (the skirt is not available as a piece), which will save me $100...but then I don't get the crib skirt. I'm going to have to use a solid, coordinating crib skirt instead or have one made in a coordinating color. Gr.
We had a regular bumper on for the first two weeks. DS likes to "tour" his crib and kept ending up smushed against the side. We switched to a breathable bumper. We will probably put his regular bumper back on when he is a bit older and can roll over, etc.
I registered for a breathable bumper & plan to use that. I know plenty of people who have used regular bumpers w/ no incident. But for me, it's worth the sense of a little more safety/security to just go without the cute one that comes with our bedding.
Nope, not worth the risk. Every year at training (DH is a police officer) the coroner/Medical Examiner makes a point to say the two biggest mistakes parents make are sleeping in bed with their children and bumpers - that warning is enough of a deterrent for us.

Thanks everyone! That scared me enough into not using them at least for the first 8 months or so. I might buy them still since they come with the bedding set, but the register for the breathable ones too for the beginning few months. Thanks!
We have a regular one, but I also bought a breathable one as well. The furniture is being delivered today, actually, and I plan on putting the reg. bumper in. Once LO can roll/move, I will decide if I want to take it out and replace with the breathable. And if I do that, I will most likely put the reg. one back in once she is old enough/no longer in the high-risk category.
DD's crib bedding is from PBK, so the bumper is one of those thick ones. I have had it in since she was born and even now that her crib is convered to the toddler bed, I still have it in. She likes to snuggle up against it.
We have a bumper and we plan on using it at least until she can roll around. Once she can roll around and move we will then decide what to do about the bumper.

Our set came with one. I put it in while I was pg and the first week while he was in our room. Once he moved to his own room/crib I took it out. We had no bumper until he could roll. Once he started rolling I got the breathable bumper that co-ordinated with our bedding to keep his arms/legs in, before the bumper his leg got stuck twice.
