Nurseries and Baby Gear

How early did you start on the nursery?

My dad was in town a few weeks ago and offered to paint our nursery so we took him up on the offer.  We also installed light-blocking blinds while we were at it.  A week later, DH and I were driving home from vacation and stopped at Ikea, which is 3 hrs. away from our house.  We picked up the dresser we liked for the nursery since we were there.

We already know which crib we'd like to use and I've been in love with the same bedding set forever.  It's gender neutral so I'll accessorize when we find out the sex.

I'm not in a hurry per se; I just want to buy these things and get them done and off my mind but I'm feeling like 14 weeks seems rather early to be doing all of this.

What do you think?  When did you start on your nurseries?

Re: How early did you start on the nursery?

  • This is my 2nd so it's a little bit of a different situation, but I just now started on the nursery - so 32 weeks.  14 weeks does seem a bit early to me, but hey it's your house, do whatever you want :)

  • This is our first pregnancy/ baby so we had no idea. However, we wanted to ensure that we were in a safe zone to start, and figured at 25 weeks we would start because most babies tend to make it past the 25 week mark. You can start whenever you want, but we didn't want to just in case =/
  • with ds we started around 32 weeks.. ordered the furniture at 30 weeks.. we did a big move from colorado to california when I was 20 weeks.. we did a lot of the shopping though before 30 weeks.. stroller, bouncy, swing ect. this time around we started earlier.. around 24 weeks.. this time though we had to set up ds room with new furniture and then clear out the office move ds old baby furniture and set it up as a nursery.. then I did the shopping.. bedding, clothes, decor ect. I finished at around 33 weeks. 14 weeks is early to me but that is jmo.. usually I think most people start around 20 weeks after the big ultrasound.

  • I ordered furniture at 20 weeks since it took 10-12 weeks to come in. I was pretty nervous about it since I had a prior loss. I hated thinking that there might be furniture and no baby. If you feel ok doing it at 14 weeks, then I think it's whatever you want to do. There is no right time to do everything.
  • I've started fairly early both times.  Pretty much as soon as I found out the sex at around 16-17 weeks, we got busy.  I'm a big fan of getting it done early b/c you just never know how you're going to be feeling towards the end of pregnancy.  I'm so drained already that I really can't do much so I'm glad that room is basically finished!

  • I ordered the crib last week, but haven't done anything else. We are hosting a few couples next weekend and wanted to still have that room set up for guests so we're waiting until then. So I guess I'll really start working on it around 25-26 weeks.

  • I will probably get flack for this. But, my husband and I have bought a lot of nursery furniture, and baby items before we conceiving. We just want to buy nice baby items but don't want to spend thousands of dollars in a short time frame.

  • There are good and bad sides to starting early and to starting late. Starting early, you can buy things here and there while you catch them on clearance (or a great deal on craigslist, etc.) There is, of course, the risk that something might happen and you have a room full of stuff, etc.
  • Our nursery has been a catch all type room for the last four years, so I spent this weekend cleaning it out.  We tested out paint colors today and decided on one, so hopefully we'll get the room painted in the next couple weeks and then it'll be time to put down the flooring.  I also found an area rug online at Lowes that I really like and I need to drive out to one that carries it in-store.  Honestly, if I had the energy in the first tri to clean out the room I probably would have more done by now - though I still feel like I'm ahead of the game at this point.

  • We started the process long before TTC (approx 2 years before). If we can't have kids biologically we plan to adopt. Plus, I care for my godson and he uses the nursery at my house for naps and such.

  • Well I'm 14wks 5days and we have started. We are however remodeling the room. Only actual baby item we have purchased is a dresser, (b/c it was almost 50% off and goes to the set we intended to purchase anyways). We have started re-doing the floors and buying trim and other things of that nature. I too worried it was too soon, but I thought it would be better to start now since we can buy things over time plus with the remodeling we can still have the windows open.

  • I'm pregnant with my first right now. Aside from planning, we didn't start anything physical or any purchased until 23ish weeks. And compared to a lot of other progress I've seen at this stage, we're pretty behind.

I don't think so though, painting & furniture will be done in the next week or so and then it's mostly details/shower gifts that are still a month out.

It will feel good to make some progress though!

  • I painted the nursery over 2 years ago when we bought our current house.  It needed paint and we knew what it would be used for.  It's been a spare room up until last year.

I've decided to wait until after the big u/s to buy anything.  Since I'm a freak, I've already started a schedule so we can spread the big stuff out over the remainder of the pregnancy.

I don't think there is a too early.  Just do whatever feel comfortable for you.

  • We bought our bedding around 20w, ordered furniture around 24w (we're still waiting for it to come in!), and finished painting around 26w.  The furniture should be delivered within the next two weeks, and while I'm getting a little anxious for it, I don't think I'll be too exhausted or anything to finish things up when it arrives.  Just do what works for you.

  • As soon as we find out the gender we'll be kicking it into high gear. I worry about waiting too late and the baby coming early, or furniture being back ordered. DH and I are planners, so the sooner we get the bulk of it done, the better we'll feel and can have fun finding the little things here and there. :)
