My GTT and anemia test results:

Friday afternoon, I heard back from my Glucose Tolerance Test and anemia check that I took on Monday. My glucose was high, and my iron was low. Being anemic prior to the pregnancy, I suspected that I would have some issue with this during my pregnancy. The nurse who gave me my results told me to add two iron supplements (over the counter) each day, in addition to the prenatal vitamin I take each day. I go back this next Thursday to have the three-hour Glucose test done, and I am really hoping that it will come back okay. My fear is that the low iron level, gestational diabetes, and the possibility of my clotting factor not being good when she checks it in the 3rd trimester could mean the possibility of the doctor not allowing me to (1) attempt a vaginal/unmedicated/natural delivery, or (2) wait until Kari's time frame to come out, but schedule an induction or something instead.

(I copy and pasted this from my blog.)

I'm also worried about the anemia playing a part in breastfeeding. I read prior to my pregnancy that it would be difficult to successfully do so, and I would be very bummed if that was the case.

  • I don't have much to say other than I'm sorry. I really don't see why you would have any problems bfing if you take an iron supplement.

  • Those results just suck... I'm sorry, Ta.  Somehow, though, just like everything else, it will work out.  And just to give you a heads up, my entire family all has Thalassemia Minor - the "Mediterranean Disease" - it's an anemia (I am the ONLY one out of my immediate and extended family, gparents, niece and nephew, etc. that doesn't have it).  My mom was about to me and my brother successfully with no issues at all, so please don't get discouraged.  We're all here for you!!
  • It's something to do with milk production, baby feeding too much but not getting enough, baby not gaining weight. But I can't find anything else that says anything positive about it if you start taking the supplements prior to delivery and attempting to breastfeed. I'm going to talk to the doctor about it, and go to an event next Saturday sponsored by a company full of doulas and lactation consultants. Thanks girls!
  • I was slightly iron deficient throughout my whole pregnancy and very deficient right after them removing her, and we're still BFing.  So I think there is hope for you too!
  • Hopefully by taking iron supplements now to correct the anemia, you won't have any issues BFing.  If it's any help, I failed my 1st glucose test, but passed the 3 hour with flying colors.  GL!
  • Tara I hope it works out for you the way you had planned! T&P coming your way so that you can have a natural birth & bf without any issues!! xoxo
