help-thrush? teething? bad latch?

Owen doesn't have any symptoms but all of a sudden one of my nipples is really sore. It burns when he's nursing. It looks fine, but it feels like razor blades are rubbing against it when he eats. Yeouch!

I've never had thrush so I have no idea if that's what's happening or if it's just because he's teething and has been chomping on the paci and perhaps did it to me too and I didn't notice. It hurts so much, I feel like a new mom all over again.

Re: help-thrush? teething? bad latch?

  • I only had thrush once and it wasn't a terrible case, but I have to say that what you're describing sounds much more like thrush than anything like teething or a bad latch.  The "burning" is what makes me think it's more serious.

Have you looked in Owen's mouth?  Check for white spots......on the cheeks, under the tongue, etc.  Thrush is tough to get rid of.

I hope you figure it out!

  • Fooey. That's what I was afraid of. Who do I call if it's thrush? Pedi? My midwife?

  • I think either one can help you, but if it were me, I'd call the pedi and see what they say.  Usually if the baby needs to be treated, they can prescribe meds for you too.  That way you're both "seeing" the same doc.  OTC Lotrimin is safe to apply to your breasts as long as you wipe it off before he nurses -- but I think I'd want him checked out.
