At what age should mittens have thumbs?

I'm just wondering.  My son is 13 months old and needs mittens for this winter.  I'm going to make him some from fleece.  Do you think I should have them with thumbs or is he too young to need thumbs in his mittens?  I'm just not sure if he'll know to keep his thumb in there if I sew one in, or if it would be too hard for him to pick up anything at this age anyway.  Should I not even bother?

Re: At what age should mittens have thumbs?

  • We bought bs mittens that are fleecy inside and have a outter shell like vinyl or something? They have thumbs. I think at this point it would be nice for them to have them. They need the use of thier hands.

  • DD's mittens have thumbs. She thinks her mittens are amazing. She is always flexing her hands and moving her thumb and watching what the mittens do. She also works very hard to pick things up and move things around outside. At this age, I think thumbs are a must. DD is 15 months.
