Some of my friends swear by getting a convertible crib; others say it's a waste of $$ since you have to buy add'l parts. Any of you that have used them - do you think they're worth it, what are the pros and cons?
We bought the Graco Lauren. It does not require additional parts to convert to a toddler bed - you just take the front of the crib off. The back of the crib becomes a headboard, but not an actual full-size bed frame. So I guess if it lasted that long, you would have to buy an actual bed frame to attach it to.
Our crib (Babyletto Mercer) converts to a toddler bed by means of a low rail that replaces one of the long sides. The rail came with the crib, so we didn't have to pay any extra. Our crib does not convert to a full-size bed, though.
My main reason for not getting a crib that converts to a full-size bed is because we'll (hopefully) need to reuse the crib for a second child at some point (around the time that our first will go into a full-size bed), so we might as well just invest in a new bed for the older child. Plus, I think we'll want to do a different style of furniture for the older child - DH has his heart set on getting our soon-to-arrive son a "race car bed" when he's old enough, which DH always wanted as a kid!
Not all convertible cribs require you to buy additional parts to covert them. I have the Bily Sydney convertible crib and you can use any bed rails to convert it, not just the ones they sell.
I don't think buying a convertible is any more costly. Ours are both convertibles and didn't cost any more than the non-converitbles. I didn't bother to buy the additional rails though because I know we won't use it as a full size bed. We did convert them to toddler beds.
