Trying to Get Pregnant

any runners out there?

I am a runner and have been training for a 10K coming up Oct. 23rd.  I'm beginning to wonder if this is impacting my fertility.  I've read that fitness and exercise is fine as long as you aren't over doing it.  I wouldn't consider 10K training extreme, but it's definetly not low impact.  Thoughts?

Re: any runners out there?

  • I just started running, so I am not an expert. But I have heard that if you work out hard enough to stop your period, then it may have an affect on your fertility. If it's just moderate exercise and it doesn't affect your cycle, I wouldn't worry.

Good point.  I've actually found that my cycles are more regular when I work out regularly...so maybe it's a good thing?  who knows!

  • I'm a runner and from what I've read, its only really extreme running - but you do have to be careful not to overheat your body. Drink lots of water. I was planning on doing a marathon this year but decided against it because I didn't want to screw up my body. My OB/GYN definitely agreed that it was a good idea to postpone the marathon. Listen to your body and if you feel good then I'm sure its not a problem.

  • The only concern running has on trying is if you run 40-70 miles a week. Too much running can cause you to not ovulate. Which in turn cause you not to have periods. Training for a 10K is ok. I do marathons but I dont run more than 40 miles a week. If I do get KU I will try to keep up my running.
  • I am a runner. I am not currently running as much as I used too (That's going to change soon) b/c of a cysts causing pain, but I am definitely a runner = )

If you were training for a marathon or ultra marathon then I would worry. If you are not having a period due to running then you would need to worry. There is no reason running should impact your fertility or getting pregnant.

Running is great for you and your body especially before getting KU.

GL at your race! I love 10k's they are one of my fave distances to run = )

  • I am not sure how it would play a role in fertility but I have cut back a lot. I guess even though Dr's say you can continue running while KU, I would just get nervous that it is too harsh.  During TTC I have been cutting back and doing other things that dont include pounding the pavement.... just incase.  I've been running when I have AF or right after when I know that I am for sure not KU.  I agree with the other girls though, as long as it is not extreme! GL ! Go runners!

  • I am a runner, and w/ my crazy IF issues I find its the only thing that keeps me sane!!!! So the only thing I do is during the 2WW I don't do as many miles. I try to take it easy. GL w/ your 10k!!!

  • Thanks everyone for the GL wishes!!  I'm thinking after this race I will probably just kick it back to 3 mi runs since I don't have any upcoming races planned and it's going to be cold outside anyway ;)
