Ok, so I'm really just starting in the adventure of understanding the adoption process. I'm really wanting to foster to adopt because I will not be able to afford a private adoption most likely. How deeply into your finances do they dig? Do they look at income tax returns and things like that? I have a modest income. Im single and a teacher and I really want to adopt. Im afraid they are going to say I don't make enough money. This is probably the first of many questions. I can tell you guys are a supportive group!

Re: I will have all kinds of stupid questions...
You simply need to show that you have a stable income to support a child. So yes, they're likely going to look at income tax returns and your overall financial situation. If you're swimming in debt and barely holding your head above water, this could be a problem. If you have some debt and are paying your bills, you should be fine.
Keep asking questions. We love new posts!
Everything Dr L said is correct. They just look at finances to make sure you aren't fostering as a way to make a living and there are some nasty people who do that.
I wouldn't worry too much about being single. They are looking for stable families, not perfect ones. Also, the fact that you are AF. Am ( I am assuming from your pics) makes you actually pretty desirable. There are more Af. Am children waiting to be adopted. Some of them will even qualify for and adoption subsidy which can be used fo their expenses.
Good Luck!
PAL/PGAL Welcome
I noticed that you're in Atlanta... I am in Georgia, and the agency that we are working with is totally fine with single people trying to adopt. They also did not request our income tax forms or do any kind of credit check. We had to have our employers fill out an employment verification form, where they do write in your salary. We also had to fill out a finance sheet where we listed our income, our debts, and our monthly expenses. That was pretty much it.
I'm a teacher, too, so I know your financial pain!
amm78: Would you mind telling me or messaging me the agency you are using? I would love to get advice as I go through this journey.
I appreciate everyone's encouragement. I will surely need it!
In our state, we did have to supply a copy of the previous year's tax return as part of our home study.
