And another potty training question (nighttime PT)

This one is for Ava, who is potty trained and has been for awhile.  (And yes, I am being a late night PW--pregnancy insomnia is terrible for me in the third trimester, which I am about to be in--sorry in advance).  Anyway...

I have been told to not worry too much about nighttime PT, as it just takes time and is different for everyone--so she has still been in a diaper for naptime and bedtime.  However, she has been sleeping like C-R-A-P lately (even though she's been a great sleeper since she was an infant) and I am wondering if it is because I need to give more attention to nighttime PT.  Maybe she is waking because her body is starting to send her the message that she needs to wake up to go?  I didn't even consider that her sleep problems could have something to do with this, until 2 nights ago when she woke up and she was soaked.  I'm not really sure if she is normally already wet or not when she wakes, because I never even thought to ask if she needed to use the potty.  She is always wet by morning.

If your DC is PT, are they waking at night if they need to go?  Do you offer the potty if your DC wakes at night?  Or is the only sign that they are ready to be nighttime PT that they are staying dry all night (which she isn't)?

Re: And another potty training question (nighttime PT)

  • Well Rylee was waking up dry, but sometimes she would wake up crying and I would sk her if she had to go potty and she would say no. I would still carry her to the potty and let her go and she would fall fast asleep. I think the need to pee was waking her but she wasn't sure why or what it was in her half asleep state

  • I've wondered this too and the answer I keep coming to is that it's a physiological stage that they have to grow into.  Lily's been PT'd for a year and a half and still wears nighttime pants to bed because she does not wake up when she has to pee and is always wet in the morning.  I know she doesn't want to do it because she'll often say how she's going to try her very best not to pee in her pants, but then just can't control it.  I'm hoping she grows out of it sooner than later!
