Didn't hear the heart beat...

Hi everyone! Im new here - we finally got pregnant with baby #1. And on top of that,  we just have our first appointment today and now can proudly say we are due May 1st. I'm soooo thrilled, but worried at the same time. The doctor went to listen to the heart beat and couldn't find it. I realize that everyone I've talked to says that completely normal, but at the same time, that doesn't help to stop the worrying thats going thru my head. We are going to the hospital tomorrow to have an U/S and then I'm sure we will have good news, but until then I am left to sit here worrying about if I did something wrong...... I'm sure there's been tons of "we didn't hear it" stories here, but I just had to get this off my chest. Thanks for listening (reading)! Hey - Congrats to all the other May mommies out there!!!

Re: Didn't hear the heart beat...

  • I'm due May 1st also, and the dr. couldn't hear the heartbeat on Mon. at my appt.  They felt around and said my uterus just isn't out of my pelvis yet.  Ultrasound was great though!

  • I had an u/s at 8 weeks, and my doctor did not even try to listen.  I think it freaks out pregnant women when you can find it, when in reality it may just be too soon.  We did however see both heartbeats going fast, which was reassuring.

  • Good luck at your u/s today.  I'm sure you will see a beautiful baby!

  • I'll be 10 weeks on Sunday and have my next appointment on the 29th - I'll be 11 weeks 5 days and my doc said they'll *try* to get a hb but warned me in advance that it still might be too early - depends on the position of the baby and the abdominal habitus. Try not to worry!

  • My doctor found the HB for me yesterday, but it took him forever to locate it, and when he did he could only get it for maybe 15 seconds.  The uterus is still behind the bone, and the baby is still soooo tiny, that they have to kind of chase it around, plus at this point your baby can move around alot in your uterus, so it was probably just playing chase away from the doppler, don't worry, and gl with your u/s.
  • Not sure how far along you are (your ticker says 0 weeks).  I had my first appointment at 9 weeks, they couldn't hear the HB.  Went for an u/s 3 days later (friday/monday appointments) and everything was fine.  Let us know how it goes!

  • I would not worry about it one bit. At 6 weeks we went thru a miscarriage scare because I had a huge bleed at the top of my uterus. They ended up doing an internal ultrasound using a probe. Definitely not fun at all, but she detected a heartbeat (144 bpm) and we were able to hear it. It calmed my nerves. At 8 weeks we had another internal u/s and the heartbeat grew to 166 bpm. Tuesday (10 weeks) I had my first prenatal visit and the nurse used a abdominal doppler to try and hear the heart beat. The had to push really hard and it took about 10 minutes of her moving all over my tummy for her to locate the heartbeat. My baby is still really really low in my pelvic, but she informed us that if we didnt hear one it was completely normal. Just glad we did. So again, I would not worry at all. You will hear your precious babies heartbeat soon and I promise with no doubt you will start bawling.

  • I'm 10 weeks and my doctor wouldn't even look for the heartbeat with the doppler. She said next time (closer to 14 or 15 weeks). It's difficult to find until the uterus moves out of the pelvis.

Good luck on the u/s! I get to go on the 27th.
