Training pants?

I thought I would bring my question list to the pros here!

What did/are you using?  I want to get some of the cheapie thicker undies.  Where can I buy these locally?  We need the smallest size possible (2T?).  I plan to get a lot of those, and buy some training pants from the CD stores for going out.

If you have used the CD store training pants, which do you love?

If your LO goes to daycare or preschool, what type of training pants do they insist on?  Can I get by with just the thicker undies and lots of clothing changes?

One more...what do you do at night?  Should I plan to just CD her as usual until we get to night training, or buy some overnight CD training pants that pull on?  I prefer to avoid disposables as much as possible.

Thanks!

Re: Training pants?

  • I am using the Gerber thick training pants.  They do come in a 2T and those should work just fine for you.  I have about 15 pairs (they come in packs of 3).  I bought all of mine at Target.

When we initially started PT, I was having Justin wear the training pants at home and diapers at school, but he wasn't getting the hang of it since he only goes part time.  So, we switched to the same training pants we use at home.  I just do a lot of laundry to make sure we have a lot of clean ones to fall back on.  School was fine with this, so I send 3-4 pairs of undies plus 3-4 pairs of pants when he goes to school.  The first day, he had 4 accidents. The next time, 3 accidents.  Today he only had one.  I have him wear a pull-up at naptime both at school and at home.

He still wears an overnight diaper to bed at night.  I would suggest you just CD her as usual till she starts staying dry.  I wouldn't even try the overnight training pants yet, it takes so much longer to stay dry at night.

  • I never did any type of training pants. I think cloth is easy enough to pull on and off that they act like a training pant.

We went straight from cloth diapers to undies.

We also just did cloth diapers at night (with both kids). Once they stayed dry for 2 weeks at night we moved them to undies. Rylee never had an accident and Parker has had 1 pee accident at night.

And to answer your above question.... we did naked for 1 week at home and then moved to undies. It took about another 2 or 3 weeks to go diaper free outside of the house.

  • I agree with Amanda about skipping training pants.  We had some of the thick cloth Gerber training pants, just because we needed the smallest size I could find when we first started training and I found these in a 18-24 month size (at Target or Walmart... I don't remember which).  Anyway, we've continued to use them just because we have them and Ava has never really treated them any differently than her regular underwear.  Also, they really aren't that much more absorbent if that is your reasoning for wanting them.  Pee definitely still leaks through them in the event of an accident.
