blood in stool

C had a little bit of blood in his stool last week.  We kept an eye on him and it was only one bowel movement so we didn't call the doctor.  I just changed his diaper and there was blood in/on his stool again.  More this time than last time and in two different places.  It is bright red and seems to be more on his stool than in, if that makes sense.  He has been eating ok.  He is on and off grumpy but right now he is as happy as he can be.  Anyone deal with this?  How do you know when to call the doctor?

Re: blood in stool

  • Was his poop hard? DD had this when she was constipated.  That's when we started adding prune juice to her bottles to keep things soft.

  • From the what your saying, it sounds like its probably blood from the rectum. I have heard of putting a little vaseline around the opening of his rectum. Like pp asked, is it hard? Does he seem to be having diffculty going? Blood in the stool will make the stool a black/tar like appearance.

  • its from the lower part of his rectum-it sounds like constipation. Hiker was right it is black tar like when the blood is coming from the stomach. Bright red is from the lower part of the GI tract. I would still call the doc though. My pedi told me poo comes in many colors the only kind they are concerned with are if they are white or red (with blood).

  • He has always been a constipated kid.  But not truly constipated...just not a soft pooper.  He gets prune juice every morning.  Maybe I need to give him more (he's getting about 2oz a day).  Of course, I just had him at the pedi this morning for an ear recheck and he wasn't having any issues.

  • We have to put it in all of DD's bottles or she gets clogged up.  We don't measure, we add a couple tbsp to each bottle, and just watch and adjust based on how she's doing.
