Checking For Blood During PIO Injections

I did my PIO injection last night w/ DH there to help - we were practicing for next week when he's away.  When I pulled back on the syringe to check for blood, a TON came rushing in - that's never happened before.  We did as they tell you and changed needles and injected in a different spot.

Does anyone know what you're in when that happens - an artery?  A vein?  A blood vessel?  And does anyone know WHY you can't inject the PIO then - like will it kill you?  What would happen?

Just curious.

Re: Checking For Blood During PIO Injections

  • I'm pretty sure you're not in an artery there. More than likely it's a blood vessel, or maybe a vein if there's a lot of blood.

I have no idea why you can't inject then. I DO know that there are a lot of medicines that differentiate between IM (intra-muscular, or in a muscle) and IV (intra-venous, or in a vein)

  • I've had that happen a couple of times. It's because you hit a blood vessel and since PIO is an intra-muscular shot, you want to inject it into muscle, not into a vein.

I don't know if it'll kill you or what would happen if you did inject it into a blood vessel, but I tried to avoid it. ;-)

  • When you inject into a blood vessel the meds go into your system immediately.  The point of IM is to extend the absorbtion over a long period of time so if the shot goes in the blood vessel then it gets absorbed too fast.
