Dr. L

How did you go about finding potential adoption agencies? I'm not finding what I think I need on the internet.  I've found quite a few places that do homestudies but I don't know where to go for groups that do placements.

The Catholic Charities in my area isn't taking new couples and the other group in the area won't call me back.  I am just having a terrible time figuring out where to start.

Re: Dr. L

  • Doing initial searches on the Internet can be totally overwhelming and seemingly useless. I've been there!

I started by reading Adoption for Dummies, which sort of clarified things for us in terms of what kind of adoption we wanted to do and in what way. I also lurked big time on the Adoption board. They're an amazing resource.

Keep in mind you don't need an agency in your area, or even in your state. A friend of mine in NJ adopted through an agency in FL, a gal on the Adoption board adopted through a national agency, and our agency is regional, working in 7 states. You can also consider law firms or facilitators (if they're allowed in your state, or if you want to go to a different state).

Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll answer as best I can.

  • Thanks.  I'll check out one of those books.   The internet has been way too overwhelming and when I've asked on local boards everyone always mentions Bethany. (which is fine - but I'd like to get a better feel for what is out there)

It would be a lot easier if someone would just offer us their baby or maybe leave one on the doorstep.   Stick out tongue
