High-Risk Pregnancy

Echogenic focus

Hi ladies.  My anatomy scan ultrasound picked up 2 echogenic foci (or calcium deposits) on my babies heart which is a mild marker for down syndrome.  We went for a level 2 ultrasound and all of her other measurements were normal.  I decided not to do the amnio due to the slight risk but I am still very worried.  Has anyone gone through a similar situation?

  • The same thing happened to me. They legally have to tell you that this is a  marker for downs syndrome. However, I discussed it with my renowned perinatologist who I also work with and he told me not to worry about it in the least if a detailed ultrasound was normal. Modern day ultrasounds pick up questionable things that may or may not be anything at all. I did not do an amnio and my baby boy was born perfectly healthy. Good luck.

  • yes.. with ds.. he had two.. one on his heart and another on the liver.. we did not do the amnio because of the slight m/c risk ( I had a previous m/c and did not want to risk it) we did the level two ultrasound and genetic counceling.. our ratio was 1 in 191 from the quad screen.. ds was born without down syndrome. I am sorry you are dealing with this.. it is very stressful.. best of luck to you and I hope everything is ok!

  • My son had an echogenic focus on his bowel at 18w. They had us in every four weeks for follow-up. By the next appointment, it had cleared up on its own. He was born with no problems. Best of luck and try not to worry. I know, easier said tham done, but worrying won't change anything.

  • During our anatomy scan (plus extra detailed look for NTDs) we got the good news that baby didn't have an NTD but did have one of these spots. My dr and our genetic counselor were not at all concerned. These are very common. In fact, 30% of Asian babies have them. While we are not Asian, it helped me realize how much of a common non-issue they are. Our dr said there would be no follow-up (we were not interested in an amnio). At 26 weeks I was in L&D for another issue and got another level-2 u/s and the spot was gone. It had resolved itself, just like our dr thought it would!
