Starting solids question

We started Owen on solids a couple weeks ago, and he loves to grab the spoon when I'm trying to feed him. He likes to chomp on the spoon. This makes things rather messy and I have to pry the thing out of his hand after every bite. I don't remember Maggie doing this so early. I try giving him a second spoon but that doesn't seem to do much but mean I have a bigger mess and more dishes. :) anyone else have a suggestion for how to deal with this?

Re: Starting solids question

  • I don't have any good suggestions, but Jonah did the same thing (and still does, sometimes). I just tried to feed him the bites of food quickly without leaving the spoon in his mouth for very long. When Jonah's hungry, he's hungry so he typically appreciates being fed pretty quickly. Other than that, I don't have any great ideas. Sad

Same here, it does stop, I remember Henry doing that.

  • Try giving him the mesh feeder with frozen fruit in it while you feed him. Something to chomp on and it's tasty. Sorry that's all I got =)
  • 1.  I seriously cannot believe Owen is already 6 months old!

    2.  Jacob started asserting his food related independence early on (by pulling this same funny business), too.  That said, meals have always taken quite a bit of time (and are typically super messy) with him.  I'm sure it isn't what you want to hear, but we found that giving him a utensil (or two) of his own was really the best way to mediate the power struggle.

In fact, for the past few months, we aren't *allowed* to touch his food or help him in any way.  I wonder where he gets his stubbornness from?  Stick out tongue

  • I know! My boy is growing up too fast.

The pedi told us it was a sign of a dominant personality. I find that humorous since we've found him so relaxed and easy going to this point. Guess he takes after his mama not only in looks but in attitude too. :-)

Eli did it a lot and still does from time to time if I have to help him with the last bites of yogurt or something.  He usually laughs even as an infant afterwards, because he knows he's being a PITA when he does it.  :)
