When to stop using newborn insert for carseat?

I have the Chicco Keyfit 30 and I just read the owner's manual, which indicates not to use it past 11 lbs.  DD is 12 lbs and it seems to early to remove it as her head may bounce around.

Have you removed yours yet? What does your manual say? Also, the infant insert is the head portion alone right, not the one for under the legs?

Re: When to stop using newborn insert for carseat?

  • We have the same one and stopped around 12 lbs because I didn't read it earlier.  I was hesitant to, but LO's head will stay because of the reclined angle of the seat.

  • We are going to leave ours in for a while longer. We're probably on the border of being able to take it out but DS sleeps the minute the car stars driving down the road and he uses it as a pillow. He doesn't seem to take up the rest of the seat yet.

    DS is almost 14lbs.

  • Around 3 months when he was 15lbs.  Our manual didn't give a weight though.  It does seem weird, but I'd follow the instructions and take it out.

  • I have it too.  I think they mean that the bottom insert needs to come out.  I left the head rest and just took out the newborn insert on the bottom.

  • We also have the keyfit. I took the bottom insert out around 10lbs and the head rest last week (around 12lbs I think)  Her head is fine. And after I took the bottom insert out it got a lot easier to buckle her in
  • There is no weight limit for the head piece, the 11 pounds is for the bottom part.  We are still using the head piece here and DD is pushing 14 pounds.
  • I stopped at 6 weeks.
I don't know what the manual said, so Liam probably wasn't over the weight limit, but it was starting to piss him off.

  • We took the head rest out just a few days ago. He seems to like it a lot better without it. He is very hot natured like his daddy so his head would be wet with sweat when you picked him up out of it.

  • My Chicco manual identifies that bottom piece as the newborn insert, and the top piece is called the head support. So, I would say that when it says to remove the newborn insert at 11 lbs, it means the bottom support only.

    Same here.
