BFing baby peeing but not pooping?

My baby is a week old. At her 1 wk pedi appt. she'd put on 3 ounces from her lowest post-birth weight ( measured three days earlier), which meant if she kept up her ounce a day rate, she'd be back up to birth weight by 2 weeks old.

Up until today, she's pooped maybe 4-5 times a day. but i've changed 7 pee diapers today and no poop since noon. She's been feeding regularly or even more than usual and also passing gas. I'm hoping she's not constipared. her tummy feels full but she doesn't seem uncomfortable at all. I'm concerned mostly because she's still a little jaundiced and I know 98 % of bilirubin passes in the stool.

Is this kind of variation normal? Am I about to change the biggest, poopiest diaper yet?

  • I am not sure when my LO started have decrese number in stools (maybe in 2nd to 3rd week) but I was worried to. Then I started reading Baby 411- a book I got while PG and its written by top Pediatricians. They said its not the number of times your baby poops but what the poop looks like when they finally go. I would still check with your pediatrician just to make sure, but reading that made me feel a lot better.

  • My Pedi said it's normal for BF'ed babies to have irregular poop schedules. As long as you're having wets, you're good.

  • Thanks, guys! I am trying not to get neurotic about every unusual thing that happens with my baby.

I have Baby 411 and am slowly making my way thru it. I've already read HEADING HOME WITH YOUR NEWBORN, THE HAPPIEST BABY ON THE BLOCK, and the infant sections of Dr. Spock.

    ditto. no worries.

as long as there is pee you are good. BF'ed babies either poop a TON or a little bit. lol no in between. :)

  • The nurse told us pretty much the same thing everyone else is saying at our two week appointment! She said as long as she looks and feels as though she is gaining weight then she is good! She also said it is the way the poop looks not how many times she goes(yellow mustard mushy stool is good--black hard pellets or hard pieces mean she is constipated!) I will warn you though LO didn't poop for about two days and this past Sunday we were eating at my parents and I had her in the carseat at my feet and I look down and poo was EVERYWHERE in the carseat, both my husband and I had to clean her up.. so it is possible a big poopy one could be in your future! GL! ;)
