My friend's FI just posted the following status on facebook:
When one of his friends responded that he ALWAYS takes his kid out of the car, even if he's only going to be gone for 30 seconds, friend's FI said the following:
maybe in the 80's people just looked out for one another more. maybe that was why it was ok back then to leave us in the car.
seriously. Some people apparently still think it's fine to leave kids in parked cars?!
(sorry about the formatting. copy/paste is awful)
ETA: guess the formatting wasn't so bad after all...

[spoiler]
I was in a Subway store once that at lunch time is usually has at least a 15 minute line. A guy comes into the store behind me and says "Who owns the van outside?" and points towards a van on the other side of the building from where I was but nearer the pay area.
The chick 2nd from the front (about to pay goes) "Its mine"
"Ma'am you have a baby in your car crying."
"Oh I can see him he's ok, Not like he can get up and hurt himself."
Holy cow I about died. The one time that Subway didn't have a police officer in it of course was that time. The poor baby.
People can be such idiots.
I can't believe he thinks that's ok. It'd be safer to leave your kid home than in the car. There are a lot of crazy people out there.
My mom can be the "we used to do this/that with you kids and you turned out fine" type, with some things, but this is one thing she tells me over and over - "Never ever ever leave them alone in the car, not for a second." Not that I ever would. With how often she has said this to me, sometimes I wonder if I used to have another sibling that mom left in the car..

Personally, I love how he called the baby a "thing". It sounds like he's packaging up a turkey or something..
Police officers take this very seriouly in S. FL. SAw on the news a couple days ago that a grandmother came out of the store to find her two grandson's in police custody. The officers saw that the children (2 boys 5 and under) were left loced in the car and actually broke into the car to get them out. The grandmother was literally in the store for 2 minutes and left the car running with the A/C on but was still almost arrested!! It's no joke. There have been so many unthinkable things happening to children left in cars that law enforcement is no longer turning a blind eye, and rightfully so!!
