I don't like it for a girl at all (well, I like it as a nn for Lorelei).
It is a boy's name and always will be in my opinion, just like Riley and Rowan!! Every Rory, Rowan, and Riley that I have met and know IRL are all boys.
HATE boy's names on girls. But I do like boy nn's on girls (Francesca >> Frankie; Ramona >> Remi ...)
Well I am weirdo then. My girl dog is Reilly. And then DD has middle name Rowan.
But MY name is Fiona. So that counts for something...
I usually agree with even the snarkiest people on this board, but I (obviously) LOVE Rory for a little girl! It sounds kind of feminine to me to be a boy's name.
The one problem I've run into is that some people think I'm saying "Lori" when I tell them my daughter's name. I don't have any confusion in regards to gender, though.
(Here's my Rory:)
Missed Miscarriage 9 weeks/Missed Miscarriage 12 weeks/Natural Miscarriage 5.5 weeks BFP 11/6/09. Rory Anne Born 6/28/10!
It's a boys' name and I cannot stand boys' names on girls. As a girl and now as a woman I know I would absolutely hate having a masculine name, that's all I can think of when people choose something predominantly masculine for their little girls--remember you're not just naming your baby, you're naming the woman she will become.
I applaud names that provide options: Lorelei and Aurora with the nickname Rory, as PPs have suggested, or something like Charlotte with the nickname Charlie, but just Rory says to me that you really hoped you'd have a boy. I can't imagine being a little girl and growing up with a name better suited to my brother.
And I have to say, I've been living in a box, because I didn't know that this was ever a boy's name. It makes sense. It has that boy-turned-girl feel, but I've never thought about the name enough to look into it, and I've only heard it on girls.
Re: What do you think of Rory?
I have never met a boy Rory- just two girls so I guess I don't think about it that way but I know it is traditionally a boy's name.
Oooh. I know three Rorys, all boys (one of them an ex actually!) The only time I've ever heard a girl named Rory was a nn for Aurora.

From the name of the last king of Ireland....all boy.
I do find it okay on a girl only if it's a nick name for a longer name like Lorelei.

that is random.
I agree, it does sound like rebates.
Just a bit of fun...I gave a serious answer, so I thought I would also include the funny stuff that pops in my head.

I have 2 friends named Rory, 1 boy and 1 girl.
I def prefer it for a girl! Cute and I think it goes well with Elle.

Mom to Benjamin 6/2011 and Lena 5/2013; baby 3 on the way
But, I do agree that as a nn may work better so as an adult she could go by a more sophisticated name
I think it's lovely.

Rory and Elle make a darling sibset.
Ditto.
I also find it slightly hard to say.
I LOVE it...but I am kind of partial since it is my name!
My name is Rory Nicole and I wanted to name DD Rory Elizabeth but DH said no.
I would definitely do it! Especially since Elle and Rory do sound great together!
