Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Need opinion about mittens

I want to make some mittens for my best friend's kids for Christmas.  She has toddlers.  One pair will be for an 18 month old and hte other for a 3 yr old.  I've never made mittens before, so I'm trying to find a pattern or explanation online.  Some mittens have the thumb on the side and others have them sewn onto the palm of the hand.  The mittens with thumbs on the side are much easier to make.  But do they look weird?  I want these to be nice, not cheesy looking.  I am also thinking of selling a few, so in case I do, I want them to be nice.  But then again, I don't know if the average person cares where the thumb is for toddler mittens.

These mittens have the thumb on top.

If you were buying mittens for your kid or receiving some as a gift, would you care?  TIA!
