"Dated" names

Can you think of any older, dated names that have not made a come back yet but at one time was popular? I met a Bobby Jo (she's 24) & it makes me giggle because it makes me think of Sock Hop's & the 50's. I also can think of Peggy Sue. Do you think they will ever hit the charts again?

Re: "Dated" names

  • Hmm.  Barbara comes to mind--I don't really see that making a comeback.

DD's nickname, Betsy, is from that era, but I love it and it fits her perfectly.

  • Hmmm... maybe Sheila and Todd.  Not sure either were really ever that popular (but there were a lot in my area) and I never hear of anyone using them with babies anymore.

Elisabeth has been on our list for a while and I've always loved the nn Betsy and have been pushing for it. DH always said "That's not cute!" Then I showed him your siggy pic and he melted like a popscicle in Texas heat! He's officially sold on Betsy :)

  • Judith (it's my grandma and mom's names), I don't really see that coming back around.
  • Cheryl. I know a bazillion adult Cheryl, Cheri, Sherry and all the variations. No one under 40 though.
  • I think of Susan, JoAnn, and the Jeff's and Steve's of the world. They scream 50s-60s to me.

  • Nancy.  This is my mom's name and I just cannot imagine using it, even as a middle name, today.  I know it hasn't completely fallen off the charts, but I can't imagine that it will ever have the popularity it did in the 40s and 50s.  I know about a half dozen Nancys and none were born after 1955 probably.  Fortunately, if I have a girl she does have a beautiful middle name that is making a welcome resurgence, Eleanor.

Aww, yay!!  I'm glad he likes it!  It is such a cute name for a baby but it works all the way up to old lady, IMO!

I love your name! It is on our list.

There are some names that sound really 80s to me and I think it may be awhile before they come back- Tiffany, Cindy, and Stacy come to mind.

This makes me a little sad. I, too, know several Nancys, but I have to say that I really love the name; I've even considered it as a nickname for our own children. But I do think you're right, it's not coming back anytime soon: (

    Sherry/Cherie/Shari and all of it's fifteen-dozen variations. And that's one I hope doesn't make a comeback.

Lisa. I'm indifferent to this one, but it seems to be dying out.

I also feel Richard falls into this category, but I've never looked up the numbers to be certain.

Mother's generation: Nancy, Carol, Karen, Janet, Pamela, Linda, Susan

My generation: Stephanie, Jennifer, Jessica, Ashley, Amanda, Amy, Melissa, Heather

They're just so "dated," I could never see these coming back "in."

And when your kids are naming your grandkids these names..... you'll love them!

I think that names always cycle in and out, so these names are out now, but I do think that they will come back in!!

LOVE Eleanor... still trying to sell DH on it though.  Interestingly enough he loves Alice.  Don't see that being popular ever again.

Are you kidding? Alice is very much present in this surge of "old lady chic" names. I've met FIVE baby Alices in the last year. Although Twilight may have had a hand in that as well.

  • Maybe it's just me then... never saw Twilight so I wouldn't know.  I still don't like it and don't think it should make a comeback.  It reminds me of the Brady Bunch.
  • Lois and Floyd

  • My mom is Cynthia-I don't know any baby or young adults with that name. However, I think I could see this one coming back?
  • Linda, Donna, Carrie, Deborah, Jaclyn, Tiffany, Heather, Amanda, Wendy, Ren?e, Andrea, Tabatha, Cynthia, Kristen, Tina... I can only think of girl names

  • Both my parents and extended family have majorly dated names:  Karl, Kathy, Dorothy, Harold, Eileen.  50's, much?

  • To pp, I'm not so sure about Barbara. While the majority of the Barbaras I know are in their 50s & up, I do know a couple of younger Barbaras (meaning my age or in their 20s) and I think it could make a comeback. I tend to think of very strong-willed women with this name.

I agree with Phyllis, though. Did someone already say Doris? Or Gladys?

Mordecai is definitely an old man name to me. It's hard to say whether it would make a comeback or not.

From our generation, Mark feels very dated. It's a New Testament name though, so I suppose it could rise in popularity again.

  • The name Stanley bugs me... and to think that was almost my DBF's name.

AND Alice is the main character in the Resident Evil series.

    Love the name Alice :)

My mom is Nancy Eleanor, too!

I really wanted to use Eleanor for DD's mn, but couldn't get DH on board with it at all.

That is just too funny!  I couldn't get DH on board with any of my girl names, but we just found out we are having a boy!  So I'll just hold on to Eleanor for now and hopefully it will grow on him.

  • I know a couple of girls in their 20's names Dorothy, as well as a Nancy, and a Linda that goes by Lindy.  I like all three of those names and I think they have comeback potential.

DH suggested Agnes this weekend! I was pretty excited that he not only came to me with a name, but that it was an awesome name like Agnes.
