Just curious what age I should be switching from slow flow to fast flow nipples. My little girl is only 2 months but its a struggle getting something in her. I pump and feed with an added amount of formula to monitor intake. (my supply is not up but at least she gets some breast milk) Eating is the last thing on her mind.
Re: What age do you switch from slow flow to fast flow nipples?
I think it really depends on the individual baby and what works for them. DS was still on slow flow until he went to the sippy cup at 10months...he just sucked so fast that when we did the fast flow he would choke, but when we stayed with the slow flow he did fine. And by sucking fast I mean he could clear an 8oz bottle in about the time it took to fill the bottle!
Yes, every baby is different. ODD was only on fast flow nipples towards the end if we would add a little cereal to her bottle (this was only a rare event, if she didn't eat well at dinner for instance). She was on slow flow probably until she was 5/6 months, then medium.
This one is still getting all BM, and I've heard staying on slow flow is best to avoid any transitioning issues, so for now we're planning on doing that.
I tried at 2 months to go up to the medium flow nipples, but it was too soon. At 3 months I was able to move up. We tried to go up to fast flow the other day, but she did not do well. Eating is serious business for my DD so I thought she would like the faster flow, but apparently not yet.
I think you just have to try and see how she does. If it is too fast wait a few weeks and then try again.
