DS1 is in preschool at a private school and I've been looking ahead a couple years, trying to decide whether we'll keep him there for the elementary years as well. Starting in first grade, his day would be 8.45 - 12.45 with a possible extension into the afternoon for an extra fee (until 3.30).
How long is your first or second grader's day?
Re: How long is your grade school child's day?
Last year, DD went to preschool 4, 4 hour days per week
This year, she goes 3, 4 hour days and 1, 7 hour day
Kindergarten is 5, 3 hour days with optional extensions (extended days will be 8 am - 2:30 pm). I will probably extend her 2 days per week.
K is "3/4 day"--there are 2 sessions, either 8:10-12:57 or 9:10-1:57
1st-3rd grade is 8:10-2:02
4th & 5th grade is 8:10-3:00
That's all I know, as it only goes to 5th grade.
DD's (1st grade) schedule is as follows:
8:00--bell rings/line up
8:10--classes walk to classrooms
8:15 morning announcements
8:15-10:10--morning instruction (120 mins)
10:10-10:30--recess
10:30-11:45--instruction (70 mins)
11:45-12:28--lunch
12:28-2:02--instruction (94 mins)
K-5 is 8:50 - 3:10.
You can add afterschool activities until 4:30 or 6pm, but we don't do that yet (dd is in K).
Elementary schools here are all about 6.5 hours. DD's school is 9:10-3:40. That's K-6. Her preschool was 9:10-11:50.
Is it a year-round school? That's much more common overseas (you're in Germany?) and if so, then a 4 hour day would make a lot more sense and would all even out in the end.

It's not a year-round school - they have 6 weeks holiday for summer, 3 for winter and 2 each for spring and fall breaks. I'm not even sure why the afternoons are "optional". In any case, he already goes from 8.45 to 3.30 (preschool and K) and I can't really find an argument for shortening his day when he gets older. That's generally the way it works here in Germany in the public school system, though, which everyone (including the Germans) thinks is weird.
My three little ones
DS1 is in public pre-k at our local elementary school and his day is the same length as the rest of the K-5 kids, 8:55-3:45.
DS is in 4 y.o. preschool right now, it's 9 am-12pm 3 days a week.
But K in our district is essentially 8:30 (bus pick-up) to 4:20 (bus drop-off) every day which I think is insanely long for a 5 y.o. Little bit nervous about that next year. The k students have as long of a day as the 6th graders!
Our elementary school (K-6) is from 8am - 2pm
