I went in for my 20 week ultrasound yesterday and the tech noticed some uterine fibroids. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and I'm planning on questioning the doctor to death about them. I've done some very light research this morning, but thought I'd ask here what everyone's experience is. I'm trying to not freak out and just be cool and calm, but of course the back of my mind is racing especially when I see things like premature births, c-sections, ect.
Anyone have them? What's your experience, did they cause any problems with the pregnancy or fertility later on? Sorry if these are basic questions, I don't have time at work to really read up on these right now.
TIA!
Re: Anyone have uterine fibroids?
My MIL had a giant one when she was pregnant with DH (which was 29 years ago, so who knows if they still do the same things). In any case, they identified the fibroid and it was in a location that made the doctors decide to do a c-section to avoid messing with it during a vaginal delivery. But, the good news is, he is/was perfectly healthy and she was just fine as well.
I am sure it depends on the size, quantity, location etc, but I hope your doctor is able to give you some good solid answers tomorrow. GL!
I have them. I'm sure your doctor will tell you not to worry about them. Something like 45% of women have them and never know they have them until they are pregnant.
Fibroids grow during pregnancy because of the added blood flow to the area. I had one that grew pretty large. I could actually feel a hard mass where it was located on my uterus. Your doctor will monitor them and make sure they don't cause any problems with regards to obstruction and delivery. Again, I had one that was very large and I had no problem with a vaginal delivery. My fibroids have shrunk since giving birth (as most do) and I have had no problems.
