How do you clean running shoes?

Just got DD this adorable pair of Asics and the first time she wore them, they went outside at school and they're filthy!  I know they'll get dirty sooner or later but since they're brand new, I'm hoping to clean them up at least a little.

Do you put yours in the washing machine?  I've heard of this before but never tried it!

    I always toss them in the washer and air dry.

    Yup - I toss the kids (and mine and DH's) in the washer and air dry them.  I've heard Magic Eraser can work on shoes, but I don't know.  When I googled there were mixed reviews about that, but DD#1's dance teacher recommended it for her ballet shoes last year to make them all new and clean for the recital.
