Good name or bad name?

We just found out we are having a boy and have decided on the name  Max.  We are giving him my boyfriend's last name, which is Grimm.  My boyfriend brought up the fact that Max Grimm sounds 'evil' and may haunt him in later life.  Does anyone else think this name will haunt our child?

Re: Good name or bad name?

  • sounds good to me - Max is a very popular name but i feel that if you like it, it won't matter because family and close friends won't have the same name so who cares!!

  • You could say that about any name other than Max. With the last name Grimm, I think a lot of people think of the Brothers Grimm, who weren't exactly known for their happy stories... plus the word grim isn't really a happy word in itself.

The bigger problem for me is that Max and Grimm are both one syllable, and I'm not a fan of that. Have you thought of giving him a longer name, like Maxwell, and calling him Max?

  • I agree with PP, Max Grimm sounds, well, rather grim.  I think it is because both names are 1 syllable.  A longer first name (3 syllables) doesn't sound so haunted housish.... Joshua Grimm, Christopher Grimm, Alexander Grimm, etc...
  • We are going to name him Maxwell and call him Max for short.  The last name Grimm does make people think of Brothers Grimm who wrote some very unsettling stories.

I like Maxwell Grimm a lot!

You will have the association, but it isn't a bad name at all. I don't think it's evil, it just has a bit of an unfortunate association with it.

  • I think it is OK. Most people associate the Brothers Grimm with happy fairy tales. (I don't think most people know that their stories were anything but happy and/or about the heels and toes cut off in their Cinderella **shudder**). My DH and I have the last name of a movie serial killer. Sometimes you just have to get over the last name, KWIM?
  • I love Max, but agree with others that something with more substance would balance out your "grim" last name a little better. Even nn'd it would still most of the time be "Max Grimm" and it just sounds a little sad (to me). One name on our list is Charlie and I think it's a happy and upbeat pairing with Grimm :). Harrison, Alexander, Joshua could be cute too. For your LN (which is actually kind of a cool one, but just stands out more with a monosyllable) I really like something that resists a nickname. JMO of course!

    Good luck!

  • I love the name Max and Maxwell Grimm sounds really good, however, Max Grimm sounds incredibly like 'Maxim' if it is said too quickly.  Maybe it's just me...
  • If it were me, I'd go with your last name. (But I probably would've said that regardless of his last name)
  • Sounds very much like a Comic Book villian.  He might be the cool kid in class.
