I'm a work from home mom-to-be. My shower just passed and I got most of the stuff I was going to need for LO. Due to this, I have some extra $$$ to invest in CDs. I've decided to go for the BGs 4.0 because it seems to be what people like the best.
How many should I get to start? 12? 18? Do they really take a month to ship? And are they really coming up with better colors next year?
Re: BG 4.0s... How many?
I know the recommended norm is to try a few different brands and styles before investing in too many with a newborn, because every baby is different and what works for some may not work for others.
Trials are also highly recommended, so you can try them out and see what works before you buy (I am not doing a trial myself but that's because I know I won't get the diapers sent back ever even if I hate them).
Good luck!
You may want to get some prefolds and covers for the newborn stage--the BGs don't tend to start fitting until 8-10 lbs. and even then they can be a bit big depending on how chunky your baby's legs are.
That being said, you're going to want at least 24 of whatever you decide to go with. That should get you through two days of diaper changes so that you don't have to do laundry every day.
We currently have 20 prefolds and 16 BG 3.0s and that gets us through 2 1/2 days with some to spare (we tend to save the BGs for when we're out and about and stick with the prefolds at home). I love the BGs but I feel like I'm doing less laundry with the prefolds. Once she starts wetting heavier, I have a feeling we'll be sticking with the BGs a lot more and we'll probably pick up another 9 or 10.
Ella is finally here!

They have posted on the site that brights will debut in January 2011.
We started with 12 BG 3 and 2 flip day packs. This is the equivalent of 24 diapers. I have added 4 more used BG since and two more flip covers. This gets me through to laundry day and a few extra just in case.
Keep in mind you should do laundry every other day. The ammonia in the pee breaks down the elastic in the diapers.
