I am going to start making my own baby food and I was hoping to make it with all organic fruits and veggies. I am having a really hard time finding organic squash and pumpkins. Anyone else make their own baby food and if so did you do all organic? I am wondering if I can get away with a few veggies not being organic.
Re: Baby food making
I made a lot of DS's baby food. No, I was not particularly concerned about organic though some items actually seem easier to find (or you can ONLY find them) organic. I bought canned unsweetened pumpkin from Target and the only brand they had was organic, so you could check there. (This was not during Halloween season, so there may be a bigger selection in general right now.)
Since I didn't go all organic, I would definitely say you can "get away" with a few that aren't organic. From my reading of the research, organic farms that use organic pesticides often take a lot more applications to be effective than non-organic ones, and it's not clear yet whether it's better to have 6 applications of a 'natural' killing ingredient vs. 2 applications of a synthetic killing ingredient. Until this is better understood, I focus more on buying stuff grown in the USA than organic/non-organic.
I have been making my own baby food as well, and while I try to find organic, I am not overly concerned either way. I have made sweet potatoes (organic), carrots (not), green beans (frozen) and peas (frozen). According to wholesomebabyfoods.com peas and beans may be easier to make if you buy frozen because the skins on them arent as tough and are easier to puree.
Bottom line, homemade baby food is great for your LO, regardless of whether or not the produce is organic.
