Holiday plans?

Anyone else cancelling holiday plans this year?  I keep going back and forth on this topic because my EDD is 1/1 so if I follow my Dr.'s rules then I should be staying at home.  The other part of me thinks that my family will be celebrating 2.5 hours away and if I happen to go into labor...there is a hospital close by OR we could be home in 2.5 hours.

Re: Holiday plans?

  • Oh, hello. I have the same EDD :)

And.. all our family lives too far to visit for the holidays. They might visit us, but then someone said "Well, what if you go into labor early?" and so.. no one knows what's going on now.

  • My family lives 25 hours away in a car, so there's no way in hell.  I'm really not sure what exactly our plans are since MIL is going up to SIL's, but I'm not hosting anybody and I'm not traveling more than a half hour in a car.  If that makes me a Scrooge, then bah effin humbug.

I'd love to be with friends & family, but it's really just not in the cards.  Though I'll miss them, I'll be focusing more on what a fun time I'm having with H drinking cocoa by the fire.

For you, I'd make sure you look good & hard at your insurance coverage.  It's very possible that the nearest hospital 2 hours away isn't covered and if you go into labor you'll have to drive an eternity to a hospital where you are covered, or you'll have to pay for the entire thing OOP.

  • Look into your insurance. Being that far away from your hospital may be considered out of network.

We have canceled plans this year only because they won't let me go past New Year's since I am carrying twins. We will celebrate at a later date. What about your family coming to you instead?

  • My due date is 1/2 and we are not traveling for the holidays.  Typically we drive 2.5 hours on Christmas Eve to DH's parents and stay until Christmas morning and then travel to see my family but I'm not risking being so far away from my hospital so close do my due date.  What if you are stuck in traffic and go into labor on your way home from the long drive?  THAT is my biggest fear.  My mom only lives 45 minutes away but is in NJ so I'm even hesitant to travel to her house.  So...we've given our families an open invitation to our house if they want to see us.  If not, we'll celebrate Christmas with our families after LO arrives.

  • We are 2.5 hours from DH's family and 3-3.5 hours from my family. We will be staying home for Christmas this year (my EDD is 1/6), we just don't feel comfortable. Also, I imagine if I went into labor on a trip that I'd be out of network, however I haven't confirmed that. I just don't want to risk it and also labor will be stressful enough, I want to at least be familiar with the hospital and my Dr.

  • My EDD is 1/15 and I will be 36 weeks at X-mas. My health plan won't pay for a delivery at a hospital other than the one they contract with after 36 weeks so I have to stay within a 2 hr radius, which rules out going to IL's for x-mas eve like we usually do. They will be coming to us and staying until x-mas morning when we will drive 20 min to my parent's house.

Lately for New Years I have my sister, her husband and a couple that is friends with us all and I make yummy appetizers and we watch the ball drop, pretty low key. This year, I will be 38 weeks pg and my sister has a baby and my friend is going through IVF, so hopefully she'll be pg. I told them everyone is more than welcome to come but I can't promise that we will have such good food, it will probably be more like pigs in a blanket and totino's pizza rolls rather than home made meat balls and arancini.

I'm 3days behind you and yes, I will be sitting at home. My in-laws are 2hrs away, but we have already told them that we will not be visiting. While yes, there are hospitals near them, they aren't all equal. Plus, you would need to check your insurance's coverage for other hospitals.

Also, don't forget that, depending on where you live, holiday traffic can greatly increase the travel time.

  • For some crazy reason I thought it would be nice to host Thanksgiving and made a huge deal about it since last Thanksgiving.  It's our third Thanksgiving since living in our house so I thought it would be special, so now I'll be 8 months preg and trying to cook all day.  My family is great though, I know my mom will come over early and help me do whatever cleaning or cooking that I need help with.  Others offered too.

I decided I don't want to do anything big for Christmas day (my fave holiday) so we will likely just go to DH's grandma's house for a nice quiet holiday since it's only a little way from our house and it's closer to our hospital than we are anyway.  In the days leading up to Christmas we will travel a few hours away to see family (with dr clearance) but I will get a hospital list as suggested, I hadn't even thought of that!

  • My EDD is 1/1 but instead of letting me sit this one out, my family decided that it would be a GREAT idea for everyone to come stay with me! So I'll have a packed house, lots of guests and non-stop cooking and cleaning to look forward to. Confused
