Swelling at 25 weeks?

I know that swelling can be normal and I have had swollen feet, ankles and face at the end of both pregnancies, but never this early.  On Saturday I noticed that my face and feet had both started swelling, and last night my feet were unrecognizable.   I also have been having terrible headaches, and they've gotten worse recently.  All of this makes me a little nervous because I was tested twice for pre-eclampsia during my first pregnancy b/c of a variety of symptoms, but thankfully my labs always came back stable.  One thing that is reassuring is that I just had a routine checkup on Friday and my blood pressure was great.  I plan on calling my midwife's office right now, but I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and had a completely normal, healthy pregnancy?

Re: Swelling at 25 weeks?

  • I had some pretty significant swelling of my feet/ankles around week 20 and it lasted for about 2 weeks, and then went away until week 30 or after when it came back and stayed.  I have no idea why it just showed up for those two weeks, but everything was fine.  I hope everything is okay and it's just the normal coming and going of pregnancy symptoms!  Good luck!

  • I do know that it can change suddenly, so I think you're right to err on the side of caution and get checked out. However, it's not definitely a problem. I went in for twice-weekly NSTs after 30 weeks, and at one point I had normal BP on Tuesday, really high BP on Thursday, and then went back in for a check on Friday and it was back to normal. You just never know. Better to be safe and get it checked out!

  • Just because you had an appointment on Friday doesn't mean squat as far as pre-e can go. Pre-e can rear its ugly head quickly and within a matter of days/hours.

Based on the symptoms that you stated, I would make a call into your office especially if you notice swelling in the face/hands along with the headaches. If you are seeing stars and/or pain in your stomach those are other indicators of pre-e.

I would ask to have a 24 hour urine completed and monitor your BP at home on a regular basis. Better safe than sorry when it comes to pre-e.

  • Yep, I had terrible, horrible, awful, miserable (get the point?) swelling with DS1.  Looking back, I'm pretty sure it was tied to my thyroid being all out of whack and my not having any idea until my PP appointment with my PCP.  I know you talked about it, before; but have you had blood work done to check your thyroid levels?

I did.  My levels were normal... turns out I'm just tired because of 18 hour days and interrupted sleep patterns.  Who would have guessed?

That being said, the nurse did finally return my call and said I need to drink more water (more than 10 glasses a day??) and prop my feet up (ha!--Charlotte would turn this place upside down).

Hmmm...I'm all out of guesses then.  Huh?
