Night time/supply questions

After fighting Stella until 1AM to get her to sleep last night she slept until 8:30AM! (woohoo!)   So, I have a few questions about supply:

1.  I think the main reason I couldn't get her to sleep was because my supply is so low at night and she kept trying to eat, but I was completely deflated.  I even tried to manually express and there was nothing there.  Is it normal for night time (between 8pm-1am, at least) supply to be so low?

2.  With her sleeping 7.5 hours last night and 2 - 5 hour stretches the night before, how does the supply regulate?  Last night she didn't really eat from 10:30AM until 8:30AM.  Is that going to make my night supply worse?  I LOVE that she slept 7.5 hours, but I'm sure it's a fluke :)

3.  I changed her diaper last night around midnight, but at 8:30AM her diaper still was barely wet.  Same thing happened the night before.  Is this cause for concern?

Sorry for so many questions!  TIA

Re: Night time/supply questions

  • It's not unusual for nighttime supply to be lower than earlier in the day. You might want to up your fluid intake later in the day to ward off some of that dip in supply.

As long as your nutrition and water intake are good your supply will most likely regulate with her feedings. (some women just have supply issues no matter what they try. Hopefully that is not the case for you). It takes a few days for your supply to adjust to her demand.

The lack of wet diapers is a little concerning to me since that is quite a stretch of time to go without one. But as long as there was some wetness and she wasn't fussing or acting unsatisfied, it should be all right. Keep an eye on it and if it continues talk to the pedi at your next appointment. Keep in mind that disposable diapers are super absorbent and it can be difficult to tell if there is wetness or not. There might be more than you think.

  • Have you thought about trying to boost your supply? Maybe like herbs, more milk plus, fenugreek, blessed thistle..etc?

I think my pedi told me to call him if the girls go 24 hours without a wet diaper, you may just want to call in to see.

I did a lot of things to boost my supply, so let me know if you have any questions:)

  • I feel the same way about nighttime sessions as well. I've found drinking a lot of water from dinner time to bed time helps a bunch. One thing I learned is that I drink more water when its room temp...it seems weird but I'm definitely exceeding the 64 oz recommendation by doing this so I keep the brita pitcher out on the counter and always keep my glass full. If you feel your supply is tanking I would do fenugreek...4 pills 3x a day for about 3-4 days

  • Is she wetting diapers during the day? If so, you shouldn't be worried. We had several nights in a row where Fin woke up with a completely dry diaper after 8+ hours, but then soaked it when he woke up. The dr said that was no cause for concern at all. As for the supply, I would just make sure to drink lots of water, and maybe do so pumping in the evening. I have been pumping at night and giving Finley a bottle before bed which seems to help him sleep. Good luck!
