I would really like to get one of the upholstered arm chairs for my nursery rather than the traditional glider, but I was thinking of getting a regular stationary chair and ottoman to save some $. for those of you who have already done the many sleepless nights with your baby in that chair, how important was it that the chair actually glides/rocks or would a stationary chair be just fine as long as it was comfy? Thanks!
Re: How important is it that the nursery chair glides?
Considering the fact that I rocked DS to sleep for the first 8 months of his life, I'd say it's extremely important.
But it's one of those things that you either love or you hate. Some use their gliders multiple times daily (I still do, even though I no longer rock DS to sleep) and some barely touch theirs. If you buy a stationary chair chair instead, you might never miss a glider.
In the first month or two it was key to calm DD down and to get her to sleep. It also gave me 'something' to do instead of just sitting there when she was wide awake in the middle of the night; it calmed me too.
Although now I am trying to phase out the motion to help get her to sleep so I just sit and don't rock. Although when DH puts her to bed for the night he still likes to rock her until she is asleep.
it was critical for us and we still use ours every day - me and DH rock DD in it. We glide and read, glide and nurse, glide and cuddle... It was also really helpful for me in the beginning and very soothing. I had a pretty bad case of ppd and the gliding was somehow comforting to me. it is also our "go to" place when DD is scared, freaked out, in pain from nursing, we wrap her in her favorite blanket and hold her tight and rock and she calms down.
Stationary would be fine, but we LOVE the glider (shermag glider in biscuit from BUR if you are interested)
edit - and we LOVE the gliding ottoman too!
