NT Scan

Are you getting/not getting the NT Scan to rule out possible problems?  I got the scan with my DS, but I am up in the air this time.  I just feel if the doctor tells me something is wrong, I will be a mess the entire pregnancy.  On the other hand, if I don't know I may be worried anyway.

 What are your thoughts?

Re: NT Scan

  • We didn't get it with DS, but we are this time around.

We felt that the newborn period was way too crazy/overwhelming to add in finding out that our baby has some type of issues.  We'd rather know in advance and do as much planning/preparing as we can while we still have just 1 child and it's easier.

  • I just posted this question this afternoon...scroll down to see it. I didn't have it for #1 and won't for #2. I get an u/s at 9 weeks then a quad screen and then the regular u/s, which is enough for me. If I had concerns or was told to get it by my dr, then yes I would but we have no genetic history to really require me to get one.

  • We had ours today and I did it mostly for the extra ultrasound.  Neither MH or I have a history of any chromosmal problems and I'm only 28 but my Dr. didn't do an ultrasound yet so I wanted to get it done so I could have an u/s.  I'm also considered high risk because of my asthma and they are doing the 2nd level scan anyway so I guess it didn't matter.

  • We didn't do it with DD, but we did with #2.  At my 20 week u/s with DD, they found that her kidneys were dilated.  Of course, I googled what that could possibly mean.  Of the many things that came up, one item said that it could be a soft marker for Downs.  Then, at 32 weeks, she was breech.  More googling told me that many babies with Downs are breech because they don't have the muscle tone to turn.  So, from 20 weeks until DD was born, I was worried that she had Downs and we weren't prepared.  I didn't want to have those same concerns this time around, so we went ahead with the NT scan.

  • I would like to (39 and the first ultrasound is at 20 weeks) but I just found out yesterday that the nearest facility for it is a 3 hour drive. It's still possible.
