DS was recently diagnosed with a suspected dairy allergy secondary to lots of vomiting and coughing so I am looking for some alternatives for him.
I know there is a lot of conflicting info out there on if soy can be harmful or not because of the hormones in it. (I am a vegetarian and have been for 18 years so I have definatly have had my fair share!)
Part of me is concerned about about DS only having soy milk/cheese. I am wondering if I am overthinking this. Of course I will discuss with ped too just wondering if you all had any thoughts?
I know rice milk is an alternative too but I cannot find any that is calcium fortified....

Whole cow's milk makes my son constipated so I only give hime a tiny bit. For the rest of his fluids, I give him coconut milk, soy milk or almond milk. I usually have two of those three in my fridge at any time and we alternate them. I do that for the same reason, I am concerned about the phyto estrogens in soy. Whenever my son drinks a milk aternative that is low in calcium, I give him a calcium gummi supplement.
My girls only drink soy milk, but I do limit it. They don't eat the soy cheese, as most of it contains milk products, such as casein or whey. Occasionaly they have soy yogurt.
The milk they drink is calcium fortified, and I make sure they also eat spinach, edamame, figs, etc. which contain calcium.
The research of soy causing fertility problems and speculations of early puberty is based on research on rats. For a human example, look at the Japanese, whose diets are made of roughly 15% soy. They have the lowest rate of heart disease and all other cancers. I'm not advocating that everyone should consume soy, just look at both sides of hte research. And my mantra, everything in moderation.
My kids both drink soy only. They really don't drink that much, IMO. And, we don't use a lot of soy cheese since the only brand I will use is Tofutti and it's almost $5 a pack (they don't like it that much anyway). Phytoestrogens are in all plant products, so I don't get too worried about giving my kids soy since I'm not about to limit fruits and vegetables too.
I don't consider rice milk a good alternative since it doesn't have the same fat and protein content. Soy is closer to cows milk, IMO. Haven't tried almond milk b/c they like soy well enough.
