Pump question?

I am pretty sure I have heard that retail pumps are only designed to be used with 2 children and that you need to get a new one after that... someone correct me if I am wrong on that, or feel free to educate me on the "rules" about this.

I ask because even though I have used my pump with 2 children, I used it under very different circumstances each time.  With Ava, I used the heck out of it because I was mostly pumping and bottle feeding, but only for 5 months.  With Charlotte, she wanted nothing to do with bottles, so she nursed at the breast and I only had to use it every now and then, but for 12 months.  Between heavy use for 5 months and light use for 12 months, I would think I would be good to go using it a third time--right?

Re: Pump question?

  • I think "technically" you are supposed to get a new one every time, although I can't imagine anyone does that.  I am sure you would be fine to use it again provided it still works fine :)

  • Use it until it doesn't work for you anymore.

My friend has used it for 4 babies.... and she pumped at worked with all of them for almost a year!

  • I think someone on here mentioned that motherhood express will test the motor on your pump to see if it creates enough suction to be effective.  I'd keep using it until the motor quits.

  • Yeah, depending on your pump, some local hospitals or pharmacies will test the motor for you. Call around first but I'd definitely use the one you have (with new parts). Pumps are expensive!

  • When I was at Bethesda, DH brought my hospital grade pump in and they tested the suction for me.  The lactation consultants helped me with it.  I'm sure they would also test a regular pump for you!
