Lurker coming out & question about low platelets

Hello. I have "lurked" on this board all through my daughters pregnancy and now with my new pregnancy. Finally coming out to introduce myself. My name is Katie. I'm 31 weeks and my doctor just told me today that I have thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). The normal number is above 150,000 & mine is 120,000 now. I'm going to a specialist on Wednesday, but wondering if anyone has been through this. Thanks!

yes.. I had low platelets during pregnancy but at 39 weeks due to HELLP syndrome..platelets were low at 37 weeks. I have no idea what my numbers were but i did recieve 2 units of plasma after ds was born and was unable to have an epi because of the low count so I had a c section under general anastesia. i had the HELLP along with pre e.

I have the same thing going on.  I had my platlets checked at around 3-4 months and they were around 140,000.  My doctor decided to check them again at 28 weeks and they were then only 96,000.  A note was also left for the doctor, from the nurse who took my blood, saying "patient may have higher platlet count due to them possible clumping together in the tube" .  My doctor said that meant b/c they don't do the testing right away, the blood cells start clumping together the longer its just sitting there in the tube.  This is my second pregnancy.  I had low platlets with my first..think the lowest they got then was around where yours are..120,000.  My doctor said its not a big big deal, he just would like to see them a little higher and told me its like driving a car..you want to keep the gas tank closer to full for reassurance, when you see your gas going down.  I asked if there's anything i could do to up my platlets also.  He said "not really, get new bone marrow"  ummm....ok.  He isn't sending me to a specialist like your doctor is..kinda wish he was b/c i don't want to bleed to death(i've researched this since my first pregnancy), just goin to do tests again at 36 weeks(i'm 33 weeks)..but my dr. then, and the one now aren't too concerned...My first pregnancy, the birth went fine and I delivered vaginal and djidn't bleed abnormally..she was 8lbs,13oz's.  So I'm not so worried about this one..see what the specialist says..if its diet or vitamins, please let me know.

Thanks everyone. My doctor did say if they get below 90,000 they would have to put me asleep for my c-section. I be sure to let you all know what I learn on Wednesday.

I had thrombocytopenia a couple years ago. They never figured out what the cause was, but I was sent to a blood oncologist. They told me that when I got pregnant it would have to be watched very closely to make sure it didn't return. I get blood work done tomorrow and get results monday. I am hoping it doesn't return because I plan on having a natural birth. Good luck hun and you will be in my prayers.

 Also had HELLP syndrome, but there was many other symptoms like high blood pressure, elevated liver enzymes, severe swelling in my hands and feet, sounds like your drs are on top of everything which is wonderful because mine was left undiagnosed in till I was emitted to the ER for a swollen liver and had to be induced!! , ::::::MRSSCHRAGER::::: if you have a moment I have a question, I haven't found anyone else with HELLP did you have the terrible itching??
