Potty Training

I'm confused

Ok, DD is 2.5 years old.  She has been using the potty pretty well (about half the time) for the last week or so.  Even asking to go to the potty when we are not at home, which my sister told me was a pretty big deal for her little boy (apparently thought being out meant potty training wasn't necessary?).

Well, we started cold turkey with just undies today.  When she got up, I changed her diaper from overnight and put on her undies.  She's VERY excited about them...Tinkerbell and Princesses, whatever...so she told me when she had to go and got on her potty and did her thing fine.

Then, she peed through 6 pairs of underwear (3 at one time at one point, didn't realize she'd scored some extras on her own!) and pooped once.  So I decided maybe she's not ready for that and put her back in a diaper.

Once she had the diaper on, she again began giving me cues that she needed to go.  Once to pee, and once she was already in the bathroom and on the potty herself to poop.

Is this normal?  She seems to be excited by the big girl panties but she seems to do worse in them.  Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: I'm confused

  • Hi,

I remember you from way back on the TTC boards; my DD is almost 2.5 years old as well, and we're having similar issues!  So first: hi there! :)  As for the undies, I've heard from others that it can be like this at first, until she connects the urge to pee or poop with needing to take the underwear down first, which is a different process (duh) than just keeping the diaper on.  We got DD some big girl underwear a couple of months ago and she was also soooooo excited about them--I thought for sure it would be the motivation she needed to try to get some pee/poop in the potty!  Nope. :)  She had accidents in them and refused to go anywhere NEAR the potty for several weeks, so I put the underwear away and we've just been having "naked time" periodically during the day at specific intervals. No huge success stories yet (and in fact I think the only thing mine is learning right now is how to hold her pee for as long as it takes to get another diaper on, and she might have a UTI as a result, yay), but one thing that I think might be helping us is to put toys in the bathroom that are *just* for "potty time."  So they're still novel, they're connected to a specific activity, and her desire to play with these (bunch of $1 Target toys in a bucket, nothing special) is-hopefully-keeping her mind also on sitting on the potty, and we'll eventually one day have some success there.

Keep up the great work; I think you're farther ahead than we are for sure, just maybe having a bit of backsliding as your DD gets used to the concept of undies and how the point is to keep them dry b/c they don't absorb pee/poop like her diapers did.  Hope this helps!
