We only are getting one infant car seat but two bases. I never thought any further than that but just started wondering if we need two seats? (first time mom)
Some carseats don't require a base always. We are getting the orbit and it doesn't need a base necessarily. Initially, I was going to get two carseats and bases, then I figured that when my daughter gets dropped off to her nanny, my husband can just take her to the house in the carseat, then I can pick her up with the carseat in the afternoon with the second base in my car. Then I called Orbit and they said the carseat doesn't always need a base (the base is $220 extra for the orbit). I am still undecided if I will stick with one or get two anyway because of the orbit rotation feature haha
we got one seat and 3 bases (one for grandma), but for when we switch to the convertible when s/he outgrows the infant seat, we got one for each car.

Ditto PP - go for one infant seat and a base for each car that you'll be regularly using. You can safely install infant seats without bases, but there's room for error every time you install, so I'd feel safer installing the bases once and leaving them there.
Once you go for a convertible seat, I'd put one in each car that you regularly use with LO.
We plan to actually just put a convertible in my husband's car from the get-go (I can't think of a reason he'd take LO out without me in the beginning, and when we go out together, we always use my car) and using the infant seat in my car until A outgrows it. So, we're only getting one base, but we only plan to use the infant seat in one car.

This.
This but once the baby outgrows the infant carrier, I'd have a car seats in each car as they are a PITA to keep taking out and putting back in.
We're doing one car seat and two bases, plus a third base for my in-laws car, since they'll be taking the baby frequently.
We're going to do 2 convertible car seats, once we get to that point, though.
