Ugh tough decision to make (NIFR)...

So I have a pet guiena pig named Baba Yaga, she is insanely old for a guinea pig, almost seven. Her health is going down hill fast. She is really lethargic, has crusty stuff around her eyes and nose, losing hair, and she is making a wheezing coughing noise. I am not really sure if she is eating or drinking right now. Worst of all in the past couple days I have noticed a couple little wormy maggot things in her cage. I clean that thing twice a week, so I know it isn't a cleanliness thing. I bathed her and have checked her for wounds and she doesn't have any. I have no clue where they are coming from.

I think it may be time to take her to the vet and have her put to sleep. My DH thinks it would be insane to spend that much money to put a rodent to sleep when it will most likely die in the next couple weeks. I hate the idea of her sitting there in pain and possibly with worms or something and would prefer her to just be at peace.  Am I being crazy to consider having a guinea pig put to sleep? I have no clue how much it would cost.

Re: Ugh tough decision to make (NIFR)...

  • I'd take her in for a consult and see what the vet thinks.  It may be something as simple as antibiotics.  It may be time to let go.  If she's suffering and medication won't help- then the best thing would be euthanasia.

  • Thanks albjag. I feel so silly at how upset I am over a guinea pig, but I have had her for six years. Even if she is just a rodent you get attached.

  • I had to have a pet rat put to sleep several years ago...I went to the vet at PetSmart to have it done...and it wasn't very expensive at all. Maybe $20-40 or so...

It sucked...it was valentine's day, and I had to put my little pet down..but it was better for her..she had breast cancer and nothing could be done for her.

I'm sorry you are faced with this decision, hon....but I do feel it is better to spend the money if you can to have her humanely put to sleep rather than letting her suffer it out.

    Good luck....*hugs*

  • I'm sorry your little Baba Yaga is not feeling good.  :(

I agree...take her in and get her checked out.  I hope she just needs some medicine and will feel better soon.  Hugs.

  • Awh, Im sorry.  I had a childhood GP too, Tortie.

We had to have her put to sleep too.  I would def pay for it, rather than have a sick pet suffer.  Much  more humane IMO.

  • I agree with albjag.

And you shouldn't feel bad about loving your furbabies, no matter the shape for or for how long you've had them. They're part of you life.

I'm so sorry you are in this place.

. I agree with this, fully. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this right now.
  • I agree with everyone.  Take your furbaby in and see what the vet has to say.  Hopefully it is nothing and they can give your furbaby meds.  I think it is best to put your GP down if that is the only option, I wouldn't let him suffer.

  • Ah, I'm sorry she is sick. I agree that a pet is a pet and 7 years is a long time. Poor little guy. I would have to take her in as well. It can't be that much and she won't suffer. Sorry hon:<
