XP: BF- everything going wrong at once!

I've been battling a terrible clogged duct now for a week. I called the dr on Friday and since I don't have a fever they didn't seem concerned and told me to tough it out for a few more days. In the meantime I'm trying hot and cold compresses, massage, showers, anything I can think of.

Sooooo while I deal with that I am trying to nurse on that side as often as I can but I don't feel like DS is getting very much. Seriously about 1/4 of my breast feels clogged at this point. And when I pump, which I do every night after DS goes to bed to get a stash, I am only pumping half of what I usually do. Sooo I feel like he is hungry more and now my supply seems all out of whack on both sides. AND now his poop is green- too much foremilk? Is this coincidence or b/c of the duct too? "Sigh". I am so frustrated.

Ok, just needed to vent I think. Any ideas?

  • I don't really have any suggestions for you, you're already trying everything I would have thought of.  I never had mastitis, so I don't know any typical symptoms other than flu-like symptoms, fever, or red marks down your breast.  Even if you don't have a fever, do you have any other symptoms?

I had clogged ducts many times with my older DS and I found that he was a much better "pump" than my actual pump was.  I would just continue trying to nurse on that side as much as possible, and maybe try pumping after nursing to make sure it's completely empty.

Good luck, I know it's painful.

  • Ive dealt with so many clogged ducts and mastitis that its silly. The best thing I've found to do is to let the baby nurse solely on the affected breast and pump the non affected one to keep producing milk. The baby is the best way to unclog. The other thing I've learned is that a electric heating pad on as hot as it will go works better than a regular compress, I would keep the pad on the area on and off every 5 minutes right up until it was time to nurse. That seems to work the best. If you nurse off of one side it will probably get rid of your too much foremilk problem too
