Nurseries and Baby Gear

I have no idea what to get...

I am looking for a travel system for my baby who will be born in February. I have been looking online at Target, online at the Graco website, and I am very confused. I was hoping to get one where the car seat would accomodate up to 35 lbs, since the Graco site says they are available. When I look online at retailers that carry these, they don't say what the weight capacity on the car seat is, and I know the seats come in varying capacities.   Although I won't be carrying a 35 lb baby in the infant seat, I know that this would keep us from buying a new seat sooner. How do I know what I'm buying?

  • I know at BRU the displays tell you the weight it can accommodate.  You may just need to take a trip out to see what they have.

  • Our nearest Babies R Us is 3 hours away. So, I can't register there. I wasn't planning on registering for a stroller, but it's kind of frustrating to have to drive that far to see the strollers. Target, and  Toys R Us in our area only have about 3 models in stock.

  • Why don't you just get something like a Snap N Go while the baby is still in the carseat? That way you can do more research and get a stroller you really like when the baby is bigger and out of the carseat. IMO, most of the travel systems are huge and bulky. And you never know for sure if your baby will like being in the carrier. My DS hated his carseat and we were fortunate that we had a newborn-compatible stroller for him. DD has been better, but you really never know.

FWIW, we have a Maclaren Techno XLR that is carseat (and newborn) compatible. It's been really great and isn't as huge as some systems.

Oh, and getting a larger infant seat won't necessarily mean you'll delay getting another seat. Evan if the baby is still well within the height and weight limit for the infant seat, babies get heavy very quickly and you might find you don't want to lug it around for very long, especially if your baby isn't a fan and/or isn't really napping in the seat anyhow. We switched DS at 8 months and are going to be switching DD earlier. She's already hard to carry and rarely naps it in anymore. She likes the stroller alone just fine. There is getting to be little reason to keep her in the infant seat. Just some food for thought if it helps your decision.

  • A lot of the carseats have the weight limit in the name.  i.e. the Graco Snugride 32 goes up to 32lbs, the Snugride 35 goes up to 35lbs, the Chicco Keyfit30 goes up to 30lbs, etc. Does that help?
