  • I don't know why they would do it @ 8 weeks, the placenta is no where near developed. I did my first @ 18 weeks at least the placenta is somewhat mature. Lots of people fail the 1 hr. And, if you do fail the 3hr, GD is not the end of the world. Think about it, things could be A LOT worse.

  • And, if you think about it, if you do end up with GD at least it's only 1 trimester instead of all 3.  I think this last tri will fly by...at least thats what all the other pregnant ladies at work tell me.

  • I am right there with you....I took my one hour on Tuesday and failed. I took my 3 hour test yesterday; it was extremely brutal and emotional for me. I had to fast and my appt was at 7 am yesterday morning, when I got there they took my blood right away, because I had to fast my veins sucked, and it took them about 4 sticks just to get the first blood sample. Then I had to drink the glucose drink, which is much worse than the first orange one because it has twice the amount of sugar. I then had to wait the hour for them to take the second sample, the lady couldn't get my vein on the second sample and was digging around in my arm, I started to get very light headed and I told her that, right as she took the needle out of my arm (after not getting any blood) I threw up it was horrible, I have never had that happen to me. She finally got blood out of a vein in my hand for the second sample. The third and fourth sample were much better because the normal lab lady finally arrived and everything was fine after that but be prepared if you have sucky veins. I really hope you do not have the experience I had, so now I am waiting on my 3 hour test results. But, I have read a lot about the glucose test this week and a large amount of pregnant women fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour with flying colors!!
  • I'm sorry you're feeling so down.  =[

I just had the 3 hour test yesterday and it REALLY wasn't bad at all.  They only took one vial each time and it was over before I knew it.  Just bring something to do to occupy your time like a book or some easy crossword puzzles or something like that.

I felt pretty down when I heard that one of my numbers came back high- still not too psyched- but in the end I'm glad that we know its an issue and we can get on top of this so we won't have further complications.

    Hang in there!

ETA: Let me reiterate- it REALLY wasn't bad.  I had to fast as well and I wasn't allowed to drink anything either, but the nurse got my vein right away each time, it didn't hurt.  The glucose drink tasted just like flat orange soda.  I didn't faint, didn't throw up, nothing.  The first hour was the worst because I kept waiting to see if I was going to get sick from the drink, but I didn't.  So just because some people have adverse reactions to this test, don't go into it thinking that YOU will.

Hang in there- it's only a few hours out of one day, you'll survive.  =D  I promise!

It's not how much, it's what type. And my peri said that any non-pg person would gain weight on the diet they give you, it's about 2200-2400 calories, I don't ever eat that much, and I am overweight. It's all about how your placenta processes sugars/carbs. It has nothing to do with you.

  • I failed the 1hr test last Monday, went back in this past Monday to do the 3hr test and have yet to hear back from the dr. I am going to assume that means I passed. They told me that if my numbers came up high they would call me in a day or two.

In my opinion, I think that the 1hr is almost a scam. I see so many people fail the first but do fine on the 3hr!! Is it a way to make some more money?? Don't stress out too much about it. Bring a book to read in the waiting room when you go. I had my mom with me and was reading "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang" and the time flew by.

  • When you go do the 3 hour, if you don't have to fast beforehand, eat a protein-heavy breakfast.  Cereal is mostly simple carbs, and could have affected your results.  My OB has told me, in general, not to eat cereal for breakfast at all b/c of the effect it can have on blood sugar, even if you don't have GD.

  • I had my first at 8 weeks too.  I am insulin resistant (pre-diabetic) so they wanted to check early and get baseline numbers.  I passed with flying colors (that was the 3 hour test-horrible during morning sickness).  I took the 1 hr test last week and passed with an 86.  I don't think it is your fault.  Lots of people fail the first test and then pass the 3 hour test.  It is also not your fault in anyway, there is nothing you could have done really to prevent GD if you really do have it.  I have a friend who had no family history or other issues but she got it, while I am pre-diabetic and I am fine.  T&Ps.

  • I failed the 1 hour with a 145, passed the 3 hour no problem.  Good luck!

  • Failed the 1 hour by a lot more than you and still passed the 3 hr.  FWIW, most breakfast cereals (even the "healthy" ones) are all sugar and with the milk which has a lot of sugar too, will raise your blood sugar by quite a lot.  The 3 hour test wasn't fun, but you'll get through it.  Just have someone drive you.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

Totally... you could end up on bed rest like me with pre-term labor.... I'd take GD over PTL any day of the week... every contraction I have sends the docs in a panic because it thins my cervix out more.

Relax and take the 3 hour... I'm sure things will be okay! Good luck!
