Baby cries frantically, squeaks when she inhales, sometimes spits up when laid down on back..?

Hello - We have a 4 day old infant. She is incredibly sweet and for the most part hardly cries at all. It is only when we lay her down (on her back) to change her diaper, or change clothes. She starts to cry like a little monkey (oo oo oo oo) and then gets pretty frantic. I'm sure someone is thinking, yeah duh....babies cry. I know that all babies cry, but what concerns me is how worked up she gets herself and mainly the squeaking inhaling going on. She lets out a big cry, squeaks, let's out a big cry, squeaks, cry, squeak, cry, squeak. It just sounds like air gets cut off, or her throat is inflamed, or something. Her squeaking is only when crying and is high pitched. Anyone know what the problem/solution might be? Also, almost every time we lay her down on her back, she works herself up frantically and winds up spitting up. She calms down very quickly most of the time when we pick her back up and hold her normally. I'm a concerned daddy, and it kills me to see baby to be in discomfort! She is gonna dig us an early grave with all this stress!!

First of all, I love seeing dads on here!!

Secondly, while it could simply be your little girl adjusting to the outside world, this is one I would call the pedi about.  It sounds like a cut and dry case of acid reflux to me (especially if she typically screams shortly after being fed).  Could be gas, too - have you tried gas drops or gripe water?

Either way, I'd probably put in a call to the pedi, though since she's only 4 days old you'll probably see them in a few days anyway, right?

It's only when she gets really, really worked up does this all happen.  Sort of like when she gets mad, she starts squeaking instead of breathing.

She hasn't cried at all after feeding.  It has only been when diaper/clothing change.  She gets REALLY worked up, then the squeaks start happening.  Elevating her when changing helps a little with the spitting up...but she still just works herself up big time. 

 I just want to make the discomfort go away. 

 My wife is usually the one posting on here.  But she needs all the extra minutes of sleep more than I do.  We will ask at our next appointment.  We were just curious if anyone knew what this might be, or if anyone has had similar experiences.

My son used to get so worked up when we changed his diaper.  The moment his head hit the changing pad, he'd freak (included in the cries, he would sqeak).  He finally got over that a couple of weeks ago.  I think the spit up is probably just a result of her getting so worked up, but it wouldn't hurt to give the doc a quick call.  That is what they are there for.

My baby also completely flipped out when being changed when she was a newborn, but she's completely over it now.  I wouldn't worry about it unless she continues to seem like she's having trouble breathing after she calms down, newborns are just still getting the hang of breathing.  Watch out for the spitting up while she's on her back though, she could aspirate it.  If she freaks out about being put down on her back, maybe let her fall asleep on her stomach against your chest, wait until you're sure she's out and then put her down on her back?  Works for my LO most of the time )  GL!

It's normal, she's a baby.  My daughter is the same way, she squeaks and squaks and hates getting her diaper changed.
