Kindergarten moms--how many worksheets does DC bring home?

This is a S/O from another board, sort of.  I am curious what is the norm is.  DD brought home 3-4 worksheets last night and one art project.  There is usually one from each subject, science, math, and language.  How much worksheet work does you DC do?

Re: Kindergarten moms--how many worksheets does DC bring home?

  • None.  I'm surprised since DS received them last year in PS.  but, his elementary school doesn't believe in them for KG.  They send home a project each month to do as a family and that's it.  I would supplement at home, but I don't think he needs it.  He seems to be learning plenty in school alone.

Well, in the Friday letter there is usually a worksheet stapled to it, that is NOT required to turn back in.  My DD likes doing them (her sis in 1st grade has one worksheet on Fridays that is due on Wed.) so they do their homework.  But if she didn't want to, I wouldn't care.

  • One came home this week and that was the first one I saw since school started.  His teacher specifically said on Open House Night that she tries to avoid worksheets as much as possible.  He did more in PreK.

Homework is tracing letters or doing rhyming words - more "worksheet" based, but as far as what they do during school?  Not very much.

  • DS (1st grade) did not have HW in K. This year, he usually has 1 worksheet plus a page in his math book each night, along with 15 min of independent reading.
  • As a kindergarten teacher, I might do up to 2 worksheets in one day. Usually we do some sort of writing or handwriting everyday. We do about 3 art projects a week, but I save them and bind them into books so the art projects do not get sent home as we do them.
  • It feels like my dd has so much homework! We have a writing worksheet almost every night, 1-2 paper books for her to read to me & return the next day, and math homework every Monday. And then of course she comes home with all the art projects, PTA letters, book sales, and fundraisers. Homework is fine but I think that stuff is just way too much unnecessary paper coming home.
  • At least 1 or 2 worksheets from their workbooks and coloring page or art project. No homework though.
  • No worksheets yet, only crafts once a week.
  • My DS has a weekly homework packet.  They are asked to do 15 minutes of reading each night, plus one other assignment that's either math, literacy, writing, or social studies/science related each night.  They also bring home copies of the current book they're working on in reading group, which they can read for their 15 minute practice or just review for fun.

  • My students do one 3-page packet per week (which they do on Mondays-Tuesdays) to practice the focus letter (handwriting, drawing pictures and writing words that begin with that letter, etc.)  They have a math worksheet that goes with each lesson, so maybe one of those per day...so, on average, I'd say one worksheet per day (one-sided).

ETA: This is what they do in class.  Were you asking about homework?  They get a packet per week, which I'd love to ditch, but I jobshare and am the newcomer to kindergarten, so I've been overruled. ;)

I'll admit that I'm not big on random art projects, regardless of how cute they may be!  I came from teaching upper grade, and I have that sort of mentality.  If I taught in an impoverished area where I felt my students didn't have access to paint, Play-Doh, crayons, etc. at home, that'd be one thing, but my students generally get plenty of play/art time at home.  I only teach half-day kindergarten and we have lunch plus recess, so I have less than 3 hours of instructional time to get them reading and writing before first grade.  I'm happy to take the standards and make them cute, but I don't feel like I have time in the day to do stuff for the SAKE of being cute, kwim?  So, I may have them do a cut-and-paste project occasionally that involves a writing component, but they're not making macaroni necklaces and finger painting every day or anything.

  • Lately he gets a packet of about 5, but that is for the whole week

L brings home about 3-4 each day.  One side of one is always for homework that is due the next day.  The others are what he did during the day.  I like how his teacher does it.  The papers that are complete show how he did through out the day esp. for handwriting.  I know which letters I really need to work on him with during his hw time each night.  So far his hw has only been letters that he needs to write.  They do a review of all the letters and do about 3 each week.  They started school Sept. 30th and are on F right now.  I havent seen any other subject come home.  :(  Sort of makes me wonder if letters is all they are focused on right now.

I did hear ds teacher talking to another at orientation that almost half the class did not go to preschool at all.  (there are 20kids in Ls class)  This makes me sad for L and for those kids.  They are having to play catch up so fast and poor L is starting to get bored.

I wish that a preK4 was mandatory for at least 1/2 a day 2-3xs wk.  Just for social skills and routine it is a major help before going to real Kindergarten.

But anyways... 1 per night except on Fridays no HW for a short answer.  :)

  • dd is in prek and they do 1 or 2 during the day and she gets one or very rarely 2 as homework each night. she goes 3 days a week full days.  I know they are follow the child's lead type school... but they also have to keep up with the kindergartens in the city.  when looking at schools (both public and private)... I've noticed the kindergarteners all go home with homework starting by the first full week of school.  one school had for the first Monday (the 2nd week of school) that they had to write "I am (child's name.)"  on three lines, then read for 15 minutes.  Here, kindergarten is what 1st grade was for me.... 1st grade is what 2nd and 3rd grade was back in the day.  they are just doing so much so early. I think it's great to introduce early... but not push. just seems like the days are so full for kids now.   when do they just play?
