Re: Chores. What do you expect from older kids?

  • My 9 y/o wipes the table before and after meals.  She's expected to tidy her room on the weekends.  She puts away her own laundry.  That's really it for regular expectations.  She's expected to be generally helpful when needed.

She does get allowance but it isn't tied to chores.  It is more of a money management lesson.  Allowance is based on a percentage of her savings and is to be used to cover most of the little extras (popcorn and bagel days at school, odds and ends from the school store).

  • My 8 yr old doesn't have regular chores but we might ask him to Swiffer the floor, wipe down his bathroom with Clorox wipes, clean his room, clear the dinner table, Windex anything that needs windexing...

He doesn't get an allowance either, but he is able to earn money for things he might want.

  • I have my 5 year old responsible for putting pop cans in the recycling bin.  He gets all the money when we take them to the grocery store for doing his "job".  He loves it!

  • My nine year old does not have a list of chores nor does he get an allowance. He does have to make his bed every morning, set the table and help clear it. Sometimes he will help DH put the trash out.  I had him putting away his laundry but that turned into a wrinkled mess so I just do it myself now. Instead now when his hamper is full, he has to fill the laundry basket and put it at the top of the steps
