GD ladies, midnight snack ideas?

Hi ladies,

I was recently diagnosed with GD and just had my meeting with the dietician this past Wednesday.  Since I started checking my bs levels, they have all been fine (90-123 for the one hour test post meal) with the exception of my am fasting numbers (114, 118).  The dietician recommended that I eat a snack when I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, which I did last night, but I still got my 118 reading this morning.  I ate some Trader Joe's crackers with cheese for 16g of carbs and 2g of protein.

The dietician is off until next week, so I'm hoping to steal some ideas for midnight snacks from you ladies.  What works for you?  what doesn't?  what does not take too much effort to eat half asleep?

TIA!

  • I have the opposite problem.  If I eat too late my fasting is too high.  I have to stop eating by 7pm.
  • They told me to eat a cheese stick or 6oz milk- but it was to lower ketones. Doesn't seem to affect my fastings which are rising!!

  • See I was told not to snack during the night (which I have done for years!).  I was told, instead, to snack right before I go to bed.  I found that when I snack during the night my fasting will be higher than usual.  My fasting numbers were still high without eating the midnight snack so I have been put on insulin (shot before bed).
  • I would think you would want to avoid all carbs when eating that late. Maybe try some sugar free jello (add some cool whip, it's virtually carb free!) and a handful of almonds? or a piece of cheese...maybe without the crackers? Like at least one other poster said, the later I eat, the higher my fasting numbers are. If I had to eat late, I would try for protein only. Good luck!
  • Perhaps a glass of milk?  I've had glasses of skim milk in the middle of the night a few times, due to acid reflux, and my BS has been the same or better than usual in the morning.  I was quite surprised.

For my bedtime snack I sometimes have cheese and crackers, cottage cheese and fruit, sugar free pudding and a slice of cheese.

    Good luck!
